All I ever do is use a 3.5mm plug for 2 wires and connect the wires to the speedo connector behind the right side cover and plug the plug into the sound outlet on the laptop then run the program.
I used to have trouble making things work with the old laptop because the signal was weak so I put it through some speakers with an amplifier and a 3.5mm jack to the bike.
Have a look here Duck did a how to that can help but it is mainly if the speedo is off the bike http://classickbikes.com/ckb.tech/0.ckb.tech.files/speedocal/speedocal.htm
