I have just inherited a 96 K1100LT, it has a resevior next to the battery underneath the seat that has blue fuid in it. What is the fluid?

Coolant? If you found the rear brake master cylinder reservoir but its small, then the only other one is the coolant reservoir.

Have a look on the home page on what to do if you have just bought a K. You really will enjoy that K1100!

It's coolant.  You described the location of the coolant expansion tank.

Behind the battery it's a oblong reservoir for coolant, in front of the battery it's a small
round one for brake fluid.
