Ok, lets hear it, what's your oil brand and viscosity preferences Question

Do you change your own or let the dealer do it Question

Last question, what viscosity is recommended for an 88 K100 Question

Hi Chris this is amazing usually people break out with almost religious fervour for their choice of oil, warning that eternal damnation is the end result of using anything else. The crunch is resolved by a simple question - is the bike under any sort of warranty? if so use ONLY BMW specified oil and genuine BMW filter. If there is no warranty then your choice is wide. Because our K-Bikes were properly designed with no clutch inside the engine we have no worries about friction modifiers causing clutch slip (not that I have ever known of a proven case of that actually happening due to friction modifiers). Some people swear by using a very high quality synthetic Diesel oil like Delvac of an appropriate viscosity for the conditions. Mobil 1 is popular too. BMW recommend Castrol oil and there is some useful info on this site http://www.ibmwr.org/otech/oilreport.html
Bottom line is use very good oil, change it at the recommended intervals and use genuine filters and you will be doing the best you can for your bike. If you have not already done so change every fluid in your bike brakes, engine, gearbox, back axle, and coolant use only the approved coolant by the way. The cost differential with the alternative makes it not worth any risk.
Regards,

Quick follow on use the grade for the temperature you are using it at I am very conscious that some parts of the world don't have our New Zealand temperate climate (no snow in living memory and only one frost this winter) some US places go to -40.
