Hi all took my 84 K100RS for a quick spin prior to my oncoming Carpal Tunnel procedure and it now has a peculiar display fault you guys may be able to trouble shoot.....

Everything used to work as it should but now; 


  • the clock has no display at all
  • no neutral light in neutral or any other position
  • it only displays "3" in gear selector position no matter what gear selected 

Everything still functions but display does not...any ideas what could have caused all this to happen at once???

Has not got wet, she lives in a garage when not being ridden had no recent work carried out.

No doubt someone has experienced this before and may even be a simple cheap fix...:suspect:

If the gear sensor on the gearbox failed it would not cause the problem with the clock. I suspect it might cause a no neutral or stuck in 3 indicator but I imagine it would not affect the clock.

I am not sure if they are all routed through somewhere like ECU, but it seems to point to the clocks in some way. How good is battery??

Digital display and neutral light are working together and it could be the digital display unit having a problem.
This doesn't explain why the clock is not working.
Have you checked fuse #3?
Digital gear position and clock are sharing the same connector on the instrument cluster (pin #1 to 5). Have you checked that it has no became dislodged?
If it looks good:
Does the clock works if you disconnect the plug for the gear position indicator (plug on the right side of the bike near the radiator overflow?)
or
Does the gear indicator works if fuse #3 is removed?

Last question: Is the bulb monitoring working?

Why stop at 2?
Have a look at the earth on pin 13 they all work through that earth and so does the high beam light but other than that I cant find a common link.
Check the high beam light and if it's no go then you have 4 things with 1 common connection. Usually when things go out in bunches its an earth that's the problem
Check out the PC board and you may see a conductor that has broken.

Hi guys jiggled some wiring under the clocks and now have no displays at all other than high beam and indicators....not even battery, temp etc....mmmmm time to carry out op on the clock box...how do you pull this thing apart ??? without removing fairing for access.....

with only a left hand of course.....

Thanks mate...Friday the 13th what could possibly go wrong...always felt that an extra hand out of my forehead would be "handy" lets see what happens as this is a government provided surgeon and there have been "cutbacks"....

Ok let see if I got this right, you are having a service job done on your hand as carcal tunnel and the lights have gone out on your bike. you cant ride after the op and you cant drive, so you will carpool. Seems to me theres no light at the end of the carpool tunnel so you will have to take a torch and remove the wiring harness connectors at the front of the binacle and look for the high  resistance issue. I'd offer a hand but I scared it might be catchy.
