Hi all from the Emerald Isle
Eddie here from Dublin and delighted to join the K100 community.
I just purchased a 1985 K100RT .Its my second such machine having owned one over 20 years ago. I also have a 1994 K1100RS / EML sidecar outfit which is currently off the road needing slight repairs, all in good time.
My reason for joining is simple. Its good to be part of an international group of like minded persons sharing a common interest, and I desperately need any help I can get with the notorious odometer failure on my machine.
The bike by the way is 1985 with only 16500miles recorded. The odometer was working when I got it so I believe the mileage to be genuine as the bike was stored for over 23 years unused. I have tried all the remedies available on line.I have dismantled the instrument pod, cleaned all the electric pins, twisted them slightly to ensure a better connectivity, used metallic grease on the connections, checked the plastic gear wheels and all seem to be in tact and free to move. Im baffled at this stage and would welcome any advice on where to go from here. I should add that the speedo is working fine.
My bike has been custom painted and is rather unique. The paint job was done by special order before the bike left the dealers showroom in the UK. I bought the bike from the UK.
I know many of you, (probably all of you ) have had problems with the instruments so I am optimistc that someone out there has a solution for me
Lets hear from you
Kindest regards from a warm and unusually dry Dublin

Eddie

Hi Eddie,  Introduction 177912

Was your bike painted by Dream Machine? My solo was painted by them from new, and when I built my outfit I had them paint the bike to match the gel coat of the new sidecar.

Looking forward to some pics of your outfit and some bigger pics of the custom paintwork of the solo.

Enjoy your time here and I guess you'll be roped in with our Irish Eccentrics. Introduction 22936

Paul.

Hi Paul

Yes, it was painted by Dream Machine befrore it even hit the road. I got all the documents with this beautiful machine, the original sales receipt, paint job receipt, all the BMW handbooks etc etc. it really is a time warp bike.
Its running like a clock except for ther clock!!!as explained in my intro.
I will certainly post some more photos of it and also the EML outfit.Thats a real beast, with the sidecar on the righthand side. Its great on the continent but a bit hairy over here on the back roads as you can imagine. Its really scares the life out of the passenger being out there on the white line in oncoming traffic. Who said we Irish are eccentric???

Hi Eddie and welcome to the forum.

Irish Eccentrics? It was a name that came about when a few like minded and adventurous Irish K owners decided to meet up for breakfast and a ride out back in August 2012 after I had a spot of bother with my LT and others here helped to sort it out. I think the credit goes to Comberjohn for that one.

Scattered around the country, in places like Belfast, Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Kilkenny to name but a few. We chose Stradbally at Co Laois to meet because timewise it was central for our far flung 'members', but also because there are some rather nice roads around there and of course the breakfast is excellent.

If you want to find out a bit more there are a few of us meeting up for a trip up to Co Down in September. We got this deal from groupon and we have I think 7 rooms booked for the weekend of 19th September and a plan in place to meet around M1 toll or Balbriggan services at 6pm on the Friday evening. All is just casual, no pressure, chance to chat, talk, see some nice places and of course talk Ks. Saturday is usually a very scenic route organised by Comberjohn who lives up that way and knows every road.
.

The offer though is about to run out, 5 hours left on it but its a steal. We stayed at this hotel last year, has an off street enclosed car park, excellent food and hospitality was great. Its cheap too, we have arranged Friday and Saturday nights so why not come along!!! Or come along on Saturday morning and stay for breakfast and a day out.  Its only 30km from Newry along the coast road A2. There will be a few just doing the day trip from Dublin but for us guys in Cork we have to make a weekend of it. How unfortunate, location has its advantages.... 🆒

Welcome to the forum, Eddie.
You should try to make it up in September. Should be a good weekend.
Check out the THREAD for photos from last September when we made it as far as Bushmills Distillery.
We even had a get together for brunch at Stradbally after Christmas. Fours wheels are an option at that time of the year for some of us.
Just a thought on your clock problem. We have checked the pick up on the rear hub and the cable to it, haven't we?

We did Eddie! well someone had to say it, we were all thinking it!

I'm based in Gorey and work in Dublin regularly. We have a couple of forum members in the city. It would be great if you made it along to the Northern run in September. I'd love to get a look at the chair sometime, I really do like the look of the k1100rs.

Great to have you along.

If you have trouble remaining with the odo do check the rear wheel sensor and the connections from that. Sitting for 23 years may just mean its a bit sticky. Am I right in assuming it is not recording speed and distance? For riding 4000rpm will give you 100kmh/60mph so its easy to work without one. 2000rpm is for 50kph, 2400 for 60kph, 3200 for 80kph and 4800 for 120kph. My LT did become a little erratic but its easy to memorise these as percentages.

Hope we might see you for 20th as its not a long run from Dublin.....we will only be 30 km from Newry.

Another possibility I found on mine: it appears that there are two types of hub pickup. One type is fully encapsulated and the other type has wires crimped into it which (eventually) allows water in. I had the latter type and although it looked okay, it had corroded internally so the speedo was distinctly zero to erratic. I wasn't aware of the encapsulated type until Motorworks sent me one as a replacement.

Nice bike. Welcome to the forum. Would like to see more pictures of the paint job.

Oh, and by the way, Eddie, drop the clutch if you please. Cool

(American expression: "Drop the clutch" means just release it without hesitation.)

Excellent stuff! L:ook forward to meeting you.

I already have a Clymer and have to say it really is excellent.

For those who remember the Banner is still in my possession. I will bring it as there are some new Ks, seems right and fitting and proper but we will need to pass it on afterwards to Sidecar Paul. I will also try to get it around to Avenger GT and Hover K100. If anyone not making it lets me know I can probably ride the long way home and meet up.

Hope we can organise a nice photo with the Banner on the Saturday....Comberjohn may have some thoughts here as there are lots of nice places where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea.

could the odo primary gear (the little one ) be split

this might explain the loss of advancement from the motor through the rest of the gears ?

just a thought,  as you said the speedo works fine
