I have a 1985 K100RT with 75000 miles on it and the Odometer stopped working after hauling it about 100 miles on a trailer. The speedometer is working fine but neither the trip nor the main odometer is working now.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

A well known problem with these bikes.

The gears that drive the odometer age. They turn to mush. The teeth strip off and/or the gear disintegrates. Gears can be bought as a set and are relatively easy to replace.

Do a search for it on the Forum (Forum Google Search). There are instructions available on how to do the repair.

It has been advised by others that you do not lube the gears when you replace them.

Thanks. I have found the gears at odometergears.com but I also read that it could be an electrical problem. Are there any easy checks before I have to tear it apart?

Veets, you need to have a visual inspection of the gears and to do that you need to remove the cluster from the bike and remove the back cover. Once apart it is easy to check each gear and if any is broken/dead, it may be worth your while to replace all the gears. Electrical problems tend to hide in the connector plug at the back of the cluster, but it sure sounds like a mechanical gear problem.

I am inclined to think that because the speedometer is working the electrical drive is fine and its the gears need looking at. Usually the electrical problems if the happen kill the speedo as well as the odometer.

HI Veets,
I'd replace them all, as I had my one serviced which they replaced not all of the gears as the rest were fine,  one year on you can guess what happened.
Cheers
Mike

That video is great. I'm going to change mine next winter. Does the speedo needle only go back on in one place? I changed some on a car once and it was slightly out forever more.

You'll be able to align it where you want it then push it down onto the spindle.

Be careful when pushing the needle back on. The spindle is extremely thin and it's very easy to bend it. Before screwing everything back together, drop the assemblies in and ensure that the needle isn't fouling the transparent plastic because they will go on 'sideways'.

One last warning: the splines on the top of the spindle are crimped on. I have seen one needle come off with the splines still inside it. The fix for that was to put it back together with a tiny drop of superglue.

Apparently lubricating the gears with grease leads to them slowly turning to cheese. I bought new gears of Otto Instruments Brisbane and was told not to lubricate them.
Regards Martin.

Thanks guys. The videos and the watch-outs will come in handy when I receive the gears in the mail.

Might pay to mark the needle position before you remove it and put it back in the same place.
