A busted back has kept me off bikes for 12 years. Now I'm back, I decided to buy a 1988 K100RS. It is a Japanese import with 31000ks in quite good knick. Started playing up not long after I got it. Now fettling mad to get it right.

Talking of being in the right place (Gold Coast), I was reading our travel diary this morning and thirty years ago this very day we drove our old VW Kombi down from the Magnolia Caravan Park in Hervey Bay to Aspley acres Caravan Park in Brisbane. Happy days.

Only had bike out for test rides so far. Have done fuel pump & hoses, filters & oils as well as plugs and leads. Next is crankcase breather hose, K@N air filter as well as new injectors. after all this hopping for reliable ride as did new  tyres & new disks for Rego.

Welcome to the asylum. You might want to do the obligatory spline lube. Plenty of help here, the Brizzie Kweensland K Kruzing Kluster runs informal rides and just as informal workshop/tune up days. We just had a mini one, but as Covid requirements are lifted bigger ones are scheduled.

Ah yes it was about 30 years ago that my wife and I set out on a 5 year around Oz adventure that lasted 8 years they were happy days indeed.

 Added up the amount of motorcycles I've had,which is 37, most jappa's with a few Harley's.
 There as about as complicated as a Massey furgussion tractor  compared to the Beamer. (except you get a tool kit with a bm. Had to buy one as a extra with the Harleys," yet it's propably most used tool kit I ever had".
Looking forward to doing some ks on this bike but no more around Austraila trips, as back doesn't hold up to well nowdays. Lucky I got three trips in prior to back injury.
Comfort was what sold me on the BMW. first rode one in 88( first the with abs). 
Surprised me when I looked at speedo doubling the normal max speed around this left hand sweeper.

Hope you enjoy the bike, make adjustments to improve the comfort (re back - options include: comfort seats, lambs wool overlay / cover, raising the handlebars... there are hordes of riders here who know lots more than me about "best practice")

After the servicing and sorting, keep an eye on the speedo; you might well find yourself going faster than you noticed. I chose NOT to buy a K100RS SE because of real / imagined threats to my license and opted for the parts bike for a case of beer.

Thanks for the comments. Yes comfort is a issue.
I have added a set of risers, which has improved ride comfort signifantly. I was thinking about a corbin seat, but you just reminded me, I still have a lambswool seat cover buried in the shed somewhere. I'll give that ago.
I have also set springs on the lowest setting & playing with tyre pressures.

It sounds a bit like the bike height is a problem. Lowering the suspension can compromise the handling beyond a certain point. A 1" shorter rear shock is available and the front forks can be dropped through the trees on their own by 1/2". Dropping the front  by itself doesn't compromise the handling as much as doing both.  Lowering both can also make getting onto the centre stand problematic. A good upholsterer can shave the nose of the seat to allow your legs to get down. They can also lower and repad the whole seat. Boots with thicker soles can help as can shoe lifts. If going for both get the lifts first to make sure they will fit in the boots. A riding skill course can also help with confidence.

Think I may have lead you astray. height not a problem. 
Chasing comfort, with a bad back I needed to change the ride posture.
So installed a set of risers so I could sit a bit more upright(works well & was cheaper than changing to RT bars & cables).
Now just need to sought a bit more seat comfort for longer rides.
It's great to be able to ride a bike gain.
I have undergone several back operations & procedures to get this far. Nerve damage to back is still a issue.
So comfort is my ultimate quest. 
With bad Back I do have hassles getting bike onto centre stand so when at home I use a short 6x2 plank under the back wheel. Takes 90% of the effort out of putting it on centre stand. Little trick I learnt many years ago.

A good upholsterer experienced in doing motorcycle seats should be able to help you. I've got four seats in my inventory chasing a more long distance seat. I finally resorted to doing it myself with the help of Mick and Paul. I tried three different grades of foam until I found the right one. There was a very helpful lady at Dyman Foam in Geebung that really helped sort it out. Clark has three grades of foam Dyman has 24 grades https://www.k100-forum.com/t15906-seat-recover. I first tried a bit of Clark foam that I had lying around but too soft. The two bits of Dyman foam cost me $28.00 Au plus $17.00 for a piece of one way stretch vinyl. What suits one person won't necessarily suit another, I was lucky to get it in two goes.

Great Idea, at this stage though mine is in very good condition. So reluntant to pull it apart.
Dad was a Upholsterer. When he passed away, I got his sewing machine & tools, as well as loads of material.
I should be able to reupholster one myself after watching my father do all my bike seats over the years.
I'll take up your idea & see if I can find a shitty second hand one.Thanks

There are a few in the Kweensland K Kluster that have a few seats so it might be possible for you to try out a couple of different seats. I've got a John Moorehouse shaved nose modded seat (Grey) a standard OEM seat (Grey) a K1100 OEM comfort seat that requires the fitting of a modded under seat tool tray {Black) and the one on my Brick which is a home mod job (Grey) . And I think one of the other participants might have a couple more.  It can be hard trying to work out what does and doesn't work and  a lot factors come into what and what's not comfortable.

I can understand. There are many different composite's of foam & different ways to upholster seats.
My father used three different composite's glued together & shaped for comfort.
I also used to ride in all weather as bike was my only form of transport. Hate getting a wet arse, So dad would shape the vinyl or leather back it with a water resistant plastic a thin layer of foam & calico. Sew it all together then fit it to the base.
It worked for me then. Had all the mates lined up to get there seats done as well.
I know what to do just don't know if I have the skill set/ capability. I'm ok at making tarps & boat biminis but bike seat requires a bit more skill & patience.
I am hoping might be able to locate a second hand Corbin (gel seat)?

As far as getting the bike onto the centre stand there is a bit of a technique which may or may not be applicable. To reduce the effort required I put all my weight onto the stand and at the same time pulling the lift lever up and back left hand is on the handlebar. If that doesn't work the stand legs can be cut reinforced and shortened by a competent welder. It is important with the curved leg stands that the sealing bungs are intact. If the bungs are split water can get in causing the legs to rust internally, and eventually collapse. When I got mine I removed the stand, removed the split bungs and applied rust neutralizer internally to the legs. I then slopped in some LPS 3 which I had on hand, Fisholene or any type of waxy rust proofing will do as a substitute. Once done just keep an eye on the bungs. If they are split repeat the treatment and replace the bungs. I have changed my stand from a curved leg to the latter straight leg stand, but the only advantage I can discern is not having to replace bungs.

Yep have had a number of heavy bikes over the years. I glad you mentioned those rubber bungs ass I forked out some doe on replacing my crankcase breather hose & thought while I was in the process I'd replace all the over perished rubbers I could find, centre stand being just 2 of those. Happy I was able to purchase all the new rubbers.
