Finally emptied the cardboard boxes of parts into more robust crates and shifted everything into the workshop. Does actually seem to have all the major lumps.

First job is to get the fuel out of the tank. Bike last roadworthy about 4 years ago and no key. So assumed the internals would be tar.

Using Sidecar Paul’s drilled cap solution (I did this previously on the RT as a precaution) revealed all. Couple of litres of stinky fuel but at first glance it all looks pretty clean (must have had preservative). So good start and thanks Paul.

Still not sure what I’m going to do with it, and with so much there a rebuild is tempting. Leaning towards building a rolling chassis for sale with bodywork and keeping the rest for spares. We’ll see.

Still waiting for reg docs from the PO, but given that he carried the block (complete ex gear box) about 30 yards to put it into the shop, I’m not going to hassle him

Puzzling though, I thought it was an ‘88 judging by the reg. plate but realoem says it’s an ‘86. Need to investigate the year on year differences, the tank has the later rectangular connector but I need to look at engine discrepancies and the engine stamp.

RealOEM gives the manufacture date, not the registration date. 

My k1 is the same as yours with a 2 year gap manufactured 91 but registered in 93.

Doh! Of course. Any idea why? I was buying bikes from shops at that time, didn’t see many 2 year old models on the floor...

Could be some innocent reason like it was at a small dealership with a low turnover, or unpopular colour, or something like that.

I'd compare the VIN plate with the number on the frame. The engine number with its week and year will,  I guess be something like a few months before the manufactured date of the bike, if it's original.

Yeah. Frame has been powder coated so can’t read the stamp. I’ll get stuck into cleaning up the engine number. Maybe I have a mismatched pairing. No biggie as long as I can show provenance. I’ve got no cash in it so at the very least I have a trove of spares. No rallies, two kids self isolating from different contacts, wishing I was in Melbourne, can’t generate the sense of urgency that an imminent trip would normally create...

Luckily I'm an hour north of Melbourne so the lockdown wasn't as severe. The restrictions are almost ended now.

After the second lock down there was silence, until it was coming to an end,  then the politicians started throwing shit at each other, but the lockdowwn worked.

It was a big relief when we got to the daily toll two weeks with no new cases and no deaths. Even better when we got to four weeks of no cases and no deaths.

It's easy to be tricked into believing the number of deaths is low because of the low death rate (say one in one hundred) but it's a highly infectious disease, so that brings both numbers high.

If you're in lockdowwn wear a mask, wash your hands, use hand sanitiser if your low tech like me and still pay with cash. It's a small temporary price for a big reward. Now there's a vaccine it should be even easier.

It's only a matter of time before the UK is over it too, just hang in there. Good luck.

My old man just brought a 10,000 boxes for $600aus from a guy south of sydney 
The PO told dad that the bike was all there and it was pulled down 6 years ago

Well dad brought it as spares but decided to put it together durring lockdown durring the rowing season just to see if it was all there 

It had a sticky sprage clutch and would not turn over but with a litle work 
pushing the bike up and down the driveway with the plugs out and flushing agent the bike is now running and rideable 99.9% complete only the front indicator loom cable cut

I won’t decide what direction to go until I sort out the legal/registration questions. But that would be quite something.

You are a star, cheers TWB! Got the engine number cleaned up and spent the afternoon trying to get a reading off Bimmer and others with no joy. You’ve nailed it: I’ve got matching numbers! Seems a shame not to build it 

Goodonya! It's good to find valid and detailed info on something that comes from time beyond immediate memory.

I had a closer look at my RS Down Under and found out it was built on 6 November of 1986 in Berlin, rather than October '86, and that it was delivered to a dealer in the Netherlands, in Rijswijk. Originally Perlmutt code 621, it is now a very bright metallic red, and was retailed on 7 Feb 1987. The PO told me it was brought to OZ from Germany.
