My K100LT mirrors are of the "pop off" type so there's a stud mounted on the faring and in the mirrors have the what may be called snaps. The snaps are loose in the mirrors and at least one has a broken ear and needs to be replaced so I don't loose my mirror. Where can I find the snap side of the business? Can't locate them on the parts fiche if they are even a "replaceable" part. Any suggestions?

Oh forgot to add, how do those darn mirrors come apart?

Chris

Hi Chris,
Did you use the "search" utility on the forum use mirrors as the search term, do any of those 3 help? If you cannot get the snaps as you call them perhaps the solution would be to put a good squeeze of silicone rubber in the snap hole and push into place with tape or pressure to hold them in place for 24 hours. That wil;l retain them in place and still be easy to tear free if it needs to de-mount in an emergency.
Regards,

I had used the silicone insurance before, it actually stuck pretty well and was pretty snug removing the mirrors. Even if I do find the snaps I believe I'll use a little dab when I reassemble them. There are some fastener stores in the area, if I find some substitute I'll certainly post.

The two halves of the mirrors have been poorly glued together with what looks like Gorilla glue, thus the reason of question of how they come apart. I need to clean them up and re glue, any suggestions of technique or glue?

i found that the plastic shell interlocks with a small step in the moulding of the mrror piece ....and someone had glued them up before me ,,,,causing interference when the shell mates up .....i took to it with a sharp knife to relieve the gunk inbetween to actually get a good mate again ...not sure of the best glue ....but i ended up useing something like a super glue (actually a 2 pack with a primer and the super glue stuff ) worked ok for me ...but im still not happy with it ....a couple of elastic bands held both halves in place whilst it cured ....

good luck chris

The snaps can be squeezed to give more pressure on the pins. Just use a pair of long nose pliers.
Gluing them with silicone may prevent them to pop up in case of the bike falling. If they don't pop out, you are in for a major rebuild of your fairing.
I personally prefer to replace a mirror than repairing cracks on the fairing.

Possibly superglue gel if the tolerances are good, never had them apart myself only changed the mirror in the housing.

Hi Chris

I needed a replacement mirror glass last year and our local glass /window/mirror shop cut me two new ones with bevelled edges for about A$20 for the pair. It may be easier and cheaper option than OEM replacements???

Regards

Mal

I would not recommend installing a regular mirror.
I tried it too, but a regular mirror doesn't give you the same wide angle view as the original. I finally bought 2 new ones from BMW.

I bought a truck replacement mirror(glass only) and tried cutting it to size. It's tricky as it's a convex mirror. After 2 tries I broke down and bought the OEM. Anyone know how to cut a convex mirror?

The best way is to immerse it into water when using the cutter. It absorbs the vibrations and reduce the risk of breaking it.

Thanks Bert, next time Gert decides to take a nap on a mirror it might be worth a try.

Great tip and excellent timing as I've got a bathroom project coming up this weekend and this will be invaluable. Laughing

Yes this is invaluable for bathroom projects too. If you have to drill a ceramic tile, this is the way to do it. You can also lay your tile on a piece of soft rubber.

I too ended up buying OEM, mine came with a clip on the back to hold the mirror to the case, you have to take the mirror apart to install the clip. Mine also had 4 layers of paint and was a bugger to get apart.
