Dead? Just a 404 page, it could be back up soon as it is still registered and will be for another month.

I guess it could just be a server issue but most times there'd be a maintenance page or whatever instead of a 404.

Following Phil Hawksley's (aka The Boxer Man) death six years ago, the BMBikes site was kept running by a few volunteers.

Unfortunately, although efforts were made to maintain the site, via some key positions were not filled (e.g. around banking arrangements). A potential to fund the site via voluntary donation also couldn't be sorted.

So the bottom line is that the site is now dead - forever.

Phil was a friend of mine, and we shared some good times over the odd wee dram (or ten).

RIP Phil

Mike

Thats sad, especially when you consider how this forum gets funded. But we have a special spirit here.

httrack for Windows users: https://www.httrack.com/. Read the instructions carefully 'coz it can build rabbit holes like you wouldn't believe. Damn useful though.

Thanks for the info. I never knew who Phil was but the BM Bikes site has always been a great resource. It's good to still have access to it via the Wayback Machine.

What a pity this website is over! It really was a gold mine about BMW.
All the info about paint codes particularly...
Did anybody saved something? I tried via the links quoted before but with no success at all.
I could manage to upload the content at another safe place, on the airhead french forum.

Phil was an Independent BMW Mechanic (old school) in the UK. His business went by the name 'The Boxerman' and was run from his garage.
Not hard to guess from the name that he specialised in BMW Boxers.  He knew his stuff.
He also liked a drop of Irish Whiskey with Jameson being the normal tipple. I recall a number of camping events, where a bottle was shared to the last drop with a group of friends. He was also to be seen with a roll up cigarette most of the time.

Happy days.

Mike

I have all of Phil's paint pages compiled into a single PDF at this link:

My June copy of our BMW Club (UK) Journal arrived this morning.

In it was an article from the club's Technology Officer. He has produced a copy of Phil's website from web.archive.com.

It is now available on our national server. You can go to http://bmbikes.bmw-club.org.uk no sign in required.

It's a replica, but without the adverts and requests for donations. It is only the website and not the forum that was also set up by Phil.

Outstanding. Oftentimes these incredible places of reference are lost for good, and remain only in the collective memory, which can and do grow fuzzier by the re-telling. Cheers.
