got the cooling fan motor rewired and rebushed. it does seem to spin a little slow and it draws approx 7.9 amps when running, assembled with the fan blade on it mounted in the shroud.



question is is this ok - or should it be less?

sounds about right to me ...im also in the mix for doing a refurbishment this comming weekend

after doing a little more research it looks like about 4- 5 amps is the figure we should be looking at ....

unless you have tight bushes /worn brushes or something ..(possibility )

Just a bit under 5 amp is right. I always make the bushes a bit loose as they are less prone to the dreaded siezure by rust. There is no danger of the armature touching the poles with extra clearance.

perhaps it will loosen up a bit as used and the amps will come down

stripped the motor to have a look. I was not happy that it was so loosly mounted in the housing.

sorry but an APAULING job had been done - I took the brushes out and reshaped them , resoldered properly the wiring contacts and cleaned everything up, sorted out the springs and "loosened up" the bushes. The job was done by a big auto electrician place, so will not do business with them again.

all I can actually say is that I paid for the motor shaft bushes, and I understand lathe time and labour - but considering the I have had to redo the job, except for the motor shaft bushes part i am a bit annoyed.

anyway I have done it and the fan runs great now , amps are down to around 3.6 Amps, and it blows strong. I also extended the plug wire a bit and cleaned up the 2 pin connector.

true to form I have at least learnt some more and now I understand this motor and will not be afraid of it in th future, and onc again i have confirmed that i should just do everything myself and only get help from guys who know these bikes.
