In the process of converting my '92 RS to an LT, here's where I am:



My knees on the RS fairing would sit right up next to the fair but would rarely hit.  With the new fairing, my knees are currently sitting inside it.  I don't have the fairing guts installed yet, but if they were installed, my knees would have nowhere to go.

So the question is: Would it be such a bad thing to move the fairing forward about an inch by using spacers at the fairing mounting points?  I have to fabricate fairing brackets / braces to attach the sides to the frame either way.

Are you certain fairing mounts for the RS vs. RT/LT are the same? I'm doubtful, somehow. 

Btw, someone always seems to be selling K fairing mounts on fleabay cheap. Seems matched mounts with respective fairings would be in order. Just a guess, mind.

Oh yeah: what is that, a Roadmaster? Century?

The mounts are totally different, but I bought the correct LT mount and it is installed.  The holes on the fairing wouldn't line up otherwise.

yes always has been an issue for the rt-lt fairings ..with the knees hitting

I had a thought that one of the better ways of fixing it was to resculpture the seat a little so it encouraged you to sit back just a bit

rabid ...remember when you take the fairing forward, some of the lower Tupperware wont line up around the radiator area ...and fork hole stuff

I would think you would have to modify is a bit to suit . which would also mean that the top part wont line up on that rear vertical line near your knees .

@charlie99: based on how it looks when I sit on the bike, I would need to move it forward around 2 inches.  That's a lot.  I would have to get longer studs, and then hope that the offset weight doesn't destroy the fairing / bracket.  Maybe a combo of seat and moving the fairing forward would be best.

Edit: I just tried it with the stock seat (wow this seat is uncomfortable), and my knees don't hit.  I just don't like being back that extra little bit from the bars.  I also lined up the old RS side panels where they would sit and found that the LT fairing goes about 2 inches farther back than the RS fairing.  I'm going to space it forward about 1/2 inch and do the rest via seat sculpting.

The fairing on the K1100LT sat further away from the rider than the K100RT/LT by about 25mm, if my memory serves me correctly.  This change was due to the criticism the K100 got from taller road testers about the lack of knee room it had.

Perhaps you have a K100 mount and not the 1100 mount.  I have a 33" inside leg and am tad over 6'0": my K100LT has me crashing my knees against the fairing, but my K1100LT affords me plenty of room.

The fairing looks like it came from a K1100 so should give more room than a K100LT. As 316 said 25 maybe 30mm further forward but I don't see a problem with spacing it even an extra 25mm. You may get to do some creative work on the side panel mounts though.
I was eyeing off that Oldsmobile and trying to work out a year but got it out by a year. When the American cars were imported to Oz in that era the models were often labelled as a year later here because the suppliers didn't start to send any till the home market was taken care of and then 3 months shipping time.

Update: I added some thick washers at the mount points for the fairing.  It probable moved up about half an inch, and my knees are much more comfy.  I can still feel the hairs on my legs touch the fairing, but whatever.  Maybe I'll do some seat sculpting in the future.

On another note, I've just realized that I don't have any mirrors, and the old k100rs mirrors are so drastically different that theres no way I could make them work without drilling holes in to my new fairing and then having the finished product look janky anyways.  I checked on eBay and k1100LT mirrors go for upwards of $120 USD  .  For some reason the k100rs mirrors go for around $30 USD.

Does anyone know where I can pick up some k1100LT mirrors for a bit less than $120 USD each?

On my RT I lowered the handlebars, which moves the riding position to the rear an inch or so. Then to accommodate the new position I changed seats to the gunfighter (solo) style. However, one may just as easily use the original (stock) bench seat if you carry pillion passengers.

Note that your windscreen is the high "LT" style, so lowering the handlebars may not be an option. Still, installing a bench seat may make the difference you're looking for.
