Hi all,

A bit about me and my bike; Name's Jon, I'm English but live in SW France and have ridden many bikes for many years whilst living in the UK. Sold the last Fireblade 8 years ago to move out here and have finally managed to get my hands on an English registered 1989 K100 RT. It's an ex police bike and has been standing undercover for about 18 months. Picked it up, dusted it down and it's in very good condition with its cherry red metallic paintwork. Still trying to get it running though!

Don't know much about BMW's and would like to know the difference between the RT and the RS, is there anywhere on here that details the specs? Also hints and tips on this model?

Hope to join other members on rides etc in the near future.

Jon.

Welcome Jon, all the info you will ever need can either be found on here (use the search box top right) or post a question and it will be answered. How these folk know so much amazes me everday but be warned you will get hooked. To quote my wife tonight "your not on that thing again!"

gmcq, have our wives been talking to each other???

Westminster, the RT is more 'sport touring', whereas the RS is more 'sport'. If it's ex-police, I'd guess it's an RT. The RT fairing is larger, with better covering for the lower legs, and the handlebars are in a more upright position. A few other things too, but those are the two most significant cosmetic features.

Look here for some good information on an new purchase:

Thanks for the welcome and info guys, reading part of the link you sent club_c it would appear my fuel pump isn't working as I cannot hear anything whirring away in the tank. Crying or Very sad I picked the bike up on Sunday and haven't been able to get it to fire once yet.

Welcome..I love south west France and many fond memories of Bordeaux/CapFerret/LacanauOcean and many other places down there....and the run over the Pyrenees....If finances were to permit I would be down there next summer.

Fuel pump or fuel filter? Definitely replace the filter either way.

Clymer manual is good, worth getting one from eBay. Some may recommend Haynes but I have not seen it so dont know which is better.

Check the fuel pump wiring connection. On the '85's I resto'd it was on the left side of the tank about 1/2 way back, but I know right around the time your was made, BMW made a change...

If you try cranking it a little, then pull a plug to see if it is wet...

Welcome Westminster
Just FYI make sure you are not trying to start it while on the side stand as there is a safety switch that will cut the fuel supply.

On a K100RT which is Jetronic the fuel pump should run a couple of seconds when you push the starter button, ...and it ain`t got a sidestand switch.

On Motronic equipped models (4V`s) the fuel pump runs for a couple of seconds when the ignition is switched on, if the sidestand isn`t in use.

Thats some location and the hang gliding has me hooked. A few years since my last one but that was in the Alps.

Camping is all I look for. I like the independence....you could set up a nice corner.

Is it wise to test the pump by connecting a battery or known good power source to two of the wire terminals under the tank?
