Hi,

I wanted to open the TGPI for cleaning but am running into difficulties. I'm trying to use a screwdriver to separate the rubber cap from the switch body but have not been successful in getting the cap to lift away. Is there a trick to getting this done?

It is old. It is rubber and it is a bugger.

Pretty sure it is just a push on pressure fit.

Whatever you do, put it inside a bag or box or do it under the covers as there are springs and pins that will leave you for good.

I have fixed a few and usually end up cutting the rubber bit right off and then use some Sikaflex which is a polyeurathane sealant/glue to seal it up and that is watertight.

Sorry for the uneducated question but I've been trying to find an answer and have been stumped. How do I get to the TGPI switch?
Do I need to remove the swing arm etc.? My K100RT has had a funny non-starting issue and the neutral light is out (I checked the light bulb and circuits in the instrument panel and all is well there). The gear indicator on the dash is mostly obscured but I can tell it is not giving correct readings. I've either got to clean the switch or replace it, but I need to find it first!

dennis ...check the 4 pin connector that leaves the gpi switch and connects to the loom under the right hand side cover .
it is verry similar to the fuel tank connector i believe .
we have seen those connections go faulty (when used for the fuel tank ,so perhaps that same applies ?)....perhaps a good clean up could be advised first, deoxit is your friend
the next location is as it enters the instrument cluster ,,,on that big double row connection ... again worth checking and cleaning before you go exploring at the rear of the gearbox perhaps ??
else its behind the swingarm down near the clutch lever pushrod boot

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Yes you do have to remove the swingarm. There is a rubbery thing that is supposed to keep the water out but it doesn't. Sometimes ti falls apart in your hand and sometimes you have to cut it up to get the switch apart and just once in a blue moon the rubbery thingy actually folds back and you can then disassemble it.
I use a polyeursthane sealant like Sika flex to seal it back up and dont have any more problems.

Now for the exciting news ........... Pull it apart inside a plastic bag as small springs and other important bits will come out at the speed of light and disappear only to be found embedded in your knee in some future time.

Thanks gentlemen. Charlie99, I've deoxed the heck out of every connector I can find. I'll double check the ones you refer to, just to be sure. Rickg, yeah, I figured it is placed somewhere fairly inaccessible. After checking the electric connections, I'll get busy with the swing arm. Unfortunately it's not yet due for a spline lube but it can't hurt to do it early. As to the issue of losing those speed of light bits: if they're lodged in my knees, they're not really lost, are they? Razz
