I didn't really know the history of the Hagon shock that came with the BMW K100, but I DID know that to adjust the preload it was necessary to take the shock off, remove the spring & then clean everything up and smother in grease. And it is still bloody hard work.

A quick STFHagon site we find that it is not rebuildable and a new one is about £300. + P&P

For once my Google-Fu was in tune with the rhythms of the earth and quickly lead me here...

http://www.realmengineering.com/page15.html

Where I find someone making variable damping billet alloy shocks ONLY for K series Beemers. And at rather less than £300. A quick call assures that the peeps at the other end of the line are reasonably serious. They want to know EXACTLY which K bike you ride, what you weigh, what the luggage weighs, your riding style, that sort of thing.
And having answered all this the shock arrived within two days.
Comes
with stainless fasteners, shims, C spanner & fitting instructions.

Goes on a treat (although a rain stoppage caused the first run out to be interesting as the damping was turned right down as per the fitting notes). I have set the sag to 25mm ish. (Suspension travel on the RS should be 110 mm. RAM suggest setting it up by eye but I'm a bit old fashioned. And I like to have a measured base line to work from). And
the damping at 4/12. A fast ride to Cambridge via the notoriously bumpy Fowlmere road suggested that 5 or 6/12 might be a slightly better setting and POSSIBLY a tad more pre-load. But apart from that it has been simplicity its self. It seems a good unit. It appears very well  made and it even looks quite pretty Shock for K100 RS .\Default\smile

I commend the gentlemen at RAM to the house.

They are indeed a good unit and are gaining in popularity right across the globe.
I removed a WP from a K100 and fitted a RAM just before I sold it and was very impressed and a little peeved that I didnt fit one long ago. I now have a Koni on my K1100 and I don't think it is as good as the RAM.

I now have an 84 RT but the shock is shook. I was going to swap the Koni from the LT but this has made me think twice, especially as they make the shorter shock. Price looks good too.

I have had the RAM fitted for a couple of months now. I set the sag to about 2 to 3 cms. Have been playing with the damping ever since but find that 3 or 4 are fine for me.

Fitted one to a K75S last year:

Shock for K100 RS K75S%20%28105%29-L

Excellent quality, great service from Realm and a good price. I'll go to Realm first when I need one for the K1.

Back in my own thread, but what is the general opinion on preload set-up ? I did it this way:

Shock for K100 RS BMW%20rear%20suspension%20set-up

Based, as I said, on 110mm of suspension travel. Anyone have a better way ?
The pannier frame, by the way, makes adjusting the preload a real PITA.  :-)

 RAM tell me the following:

Unfortunately the unit will only work with the spring platform adjuster and the damping adjuster knob at the bottom, if upside down the spring and spring retainer would foul the Hub, I hope it does not cause you to much grief.

Bugger. Yes I did. I must have seen that a dozen times & it hasn't registered. May have happened when I lubed the splines last month. Must find something to replace it. Does it gave some kind of vent or valve on it ?
