Hello K-100 Forum members,
Sayin' Hi and I'm certain to have a few questions about the mystical electronics of the K-bikes, after having run BMW airheads for a while.  Just starting to figure this one out, found a K1 bike in someone's basement, has 18,000 miles.

Welcome SteveK1
to save all the trouble, just put it into a box and send it over here, that way you'll get to keep your hair
and sanity a bit longer. But you'll also miss out on a fabulous ride. Your choice mate.
RT

Check out the section on the home page ' you have just bought a k bike'. Very important advice so don't go firing her up until you go through it. But when you do get everything done you will have one of about 7000 bikes made that will be unique!

You are very welcome here and as soon as you can put some photos up. We have a few nice K1s over here with Trapper and Ringfad.

Hi Steve welcome to the Knuthaus.
Your coming to terms with the electronics of a K bike will be easy actually . There are very few things that ever go wrong with that side of things. They have prooven to be very reliable.

Thanks for the offer RT.  I'm looking around for a box, can't seem to find one that would do the job so I suppose I just have to keep it here and figure out how to make it go down the road.Wink

Howdy 92KK.  Indeed I have read 'so you just bought a K-bike' and found the judgment to be sound, so I thought I would try asking a few questions in follow up.  I have been reading forum posts for a couple of months now as I have been fumbling around, thought it was time to register...

Hello 10-ring.  Pics, I will have to figure out how to put up some pics, that could be important...
How did I find it?  Well, sometimes I look at other forums from time to time (IBMWR) and this one has a marketplace.  A kid had been trying to sell the K1 on Craigslist in the area with no luck, but when someone suggested he post it on the BMW site I was the first one there with cash.  Supposedly his friend's grandfather died in 2002 after putting 18k miles on the bike and they were cleaning out grannie's basement.  The kid was a friend who "knows something about bikes" so had it cleaned up and running with title when I showed up.  Him and his buddies thought it was novel looking but weird.  I suppose it is a little weird but I'm having fun with it so far.  It does and has had a couple of issues.  I have sorted out most, but more on that later.  I purchased it last October and have been taking my time.

RicK G, kind words of encouragement.  I'm not sure if I detect some hint of sarcasm there about things never going wrong with the very reliable electronics...

Thanks ainsjac.  This looks like a great community, plenty of folks with knowlege (and makin' stuff up comes with age, I know).

I have a buddy from NSW visiting his sister in San Fran CA at the moment.  He has been shopping for a bike to come out to Michigan for a visit (apparently he has the next six weeks off) and I have been guiding him toward K-bikes.  Unfortunately he passed on a K-11RS and just purchased a Harley...Shocked

No not any sarcasm there at all. There are of course things that fail but the electronics is one area that doesn't seem to have inherent problems that show up and compared with the modern machines they are a fairly simple system.
Mind when they first came out a friend bought one and said he was also going to buy a 38 so he could shoot himself when the computer failed, he is still riding but not the K100.Very Happy

Welcome SteveK1.
The K bikes are pretty predictable in their issues. There is a great wealth of knowledge and experience here to guide you.
