Hi all,

My newly acquired '85 K100RT has a very cloudy (orange/brown) colour on the screen. Not a riding problem as I look over it, but it would sure look nicer if it were clear.

Has anyone tried the kits they sell to fix cloudy headlight lenses for a screen?

Any other suggestions apart from a new one?

Thanks,
Bill

All I know Bill, is do not cheat and use an electric buffing wheel.
I think it's has to be a hand job so to speak, with varying grades of paste. I was having success with 1200grit wet.dry and Autosol and decided to turn the buffer loose. Cooked the screen properly. It was then that I decided I didn't like it anyway. There is a thread somewhere with photo's, can't find it just now. It is  a slow progressively finer task. (toothpaste, talc etc). Someone will find it for you.

The miracle in a bottle is snake oil and really good if you are selling, it only lasts about a month.
I have used Brasso with reasonable results and I think Meguires do a polish for that sort of plastic.
If you use a power polisher it needs to turn slowly as a fast one like you use to buff paint on cars will burn the plastic.

I gave Charlie99 a very yellow screen and he managed to get it looking good, not perfectly clear but shiny and almost no yellow so he should know.

Save your elbow, buy a new one.  Get black like all the later RSs had.  Much lower maintenance.

JMHO.

I have done the screen on my 90 LT
Starting with 800 wet & dry paper, soapy water, going to 1000grit, then 1500grit. Then a good rub (by hand) with Maguires Plastic polishing compound, and finally a wax.
It was pretty scary looking until the polishing stage, then it looked great! Very Happy
I gained enough confidence to do the headlights on my 540i.
Just be careful, take your time, and sand in long straight lines, not circles.

I used a P2500 grade wet and dry on the car headlights, used very wet and gentlly, very effective, then polish.

yep still have it on rick ...thanks mate !

(besides some cracks that appeared near the mounting holes ...due to an enthusiastic  petrol over spray which hit the screen on a hot day ...don't know the science behind that ...sheesh )

the brasso worked well ..followed by maguires "plastix "

periodic polishing with ricks magic snake oil "automax" off ebay  seems to keep it in good condition

the screens I have seen (all old ones ) have slight imperfections throughout the plastic layers ...bit like stretch marks .....erm ...well that's a likeness ...not a derogatory statement

I guess if I kept the old bird about the speed limit this would be reduced somewhat ....
but hey ...if the old girl can do it ...im only too pleased to let her head loose every now and then  Cloudy windscreen 502531

please remember this is the older "original " rt type of fairing screen ...rather than anything new ....

hope that helps

This is what I use, along with microfiber cloths.
Resurrected many a windshield and fairing part with it to showroom effect.
I like it, as I don't have to commit to using sandpaper, which scares the bejeezus outta me.

I use Plexus. It cleans and polishes the winshield of my bike. It can also be used on helmets.
