Being relatively new to the forum and not the most skilled motorcycle technician, I have a few questions re my K. My windshield is whole with no pitting or cracks. However, when I ride on a sunny day into the sun, there appears on the windscreen blotches of coloured rainbow here and there (Can't remember if they always appear in the same place). Anyway I was wondering if this is just the same effect as passing white light through a prism or if it is resins or internal flaws in the windscreen?

I will make separate posts for the other questions I have Any help from my brothers and sisters of the K will be appreciated.

Could be a bit oily, might need a clean.

The windshield has a clearcoat applied to help prevent scratches.  It is important to clean it only with mild soap and water to prevent damaging the plastic and the coating.

Having said that, the probably cause of the rainbow effect is microscopic scratches in the coating.  These scratches can be caused by using a paper towel to wipe the windshield instead of a soft cloth or microfiber towel.  Using a cleaner with ammonia or alcohol like Windex window cleaner will also damage the coating.

Unfortunately, there isn't anything I know of that can fix this problem.  You might try wearing polarizing sunglasses to reduce the effect if you find it distracting.

Guilty on both counts. I will serve my time and reform. I used the shop towels from Canadian tire, blue, they are much more resistant than regular paper towels but do not feel rough to the touch. Who knows what they feel like at the molecular level. I should have known better, my eye doctor told me never to clean my glasses with kleenex, said the fibres were too rough and would scratch the anti scratch coating. Who Knew? But then again what is the point of paying 100CAD for anti scratch coating if it can be scratched by a kleenex???

The Windex, yes I really should be reprimanded for that. I once cleaned the lens of my Pentax SLR 35mm camera with Windex and completely reticulated the surface coating. I did not even try to request a replacement under warranty it was only a few months old.

Maybe a good scrubbing with a super fine grit emery paper will remove the coating and get me back to the base plastic then I can try to clear coat it myself. Got nothing to loose.

I have removed the windshield and am driving without for the moment.  Even with my Maui Jims' the blotches were clearly visible. I can even see the blotches in the shadow on the road as I ride.

I will keep you posted if I decide to go with the emery cloth option.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

Remove scratches with Meguiars Plastx  treat with Dymark Plas Guard and clean with Earth Choice glass cleaner. Never use anything that contains silicone, or anything harsh like ammonia and read the product disclosure statement to see if products are safe to use on whatever you're cleaning.
Regards Martin.

Don't waste your time with the emery cloth.  I have tried to resuscitate old windshields with 2500 followed by 3M Perfect It #2, #3 and Novus polish . All it does is add a cloudiness to the coating that is almost impossible to remove.

I've also tried the headlight trick of clear coating after the 2500. That doesn't work either. That damn anti scratch coating is a bitch once it's messed up.

Thank you Martin for that information, will see if any of those products are available in Canada (or equivalent), maybe on Amazon.

The windshield is usable but the blotches are annoying. Thanks to all for the input.
