Just 2 weeks to go until the gathering!

Just gone and ordered myself a comfort seat from motorworks - hope it turns up in time. Figure that I'll fit the hard bench for commuting to/from work and just use the comfort seat for touring. Might make it last longer....but then again, I might go lazy and just leave the comfort seat on! Also ordered a spare clutch cable - firm believer in fate; if I carry a spare I won't need it, if I don't carry one then I will need it.

In a fit of madness, I've also gone and ordered myself a new GPS for the trip...seemingly a very clever one (we'll see!) that will talk to my helmet, plays music, handles phone calls, tell me that it's cold, interfaces with the camera and even make cups of tea, well, maybe not the cups of tea, that would be too useful. It would even tell me my tyres are flat - if I was prepared to fork out £90 on two valve cap wireless pressure sensors.

So many toys - it must be an early birthday!

Likewise Simon, it'll be good to meet up again - it's going to be a great gathering and I'm really looking forward to it. I have already doused my bike with Comberjohns secret rain repellant (leprechaun piss) to help ward off inclement weather, but trust in him to do the rest! So many K's together will be a great photo op for the forum.

No, I prefer the electronic ones that tell you something and don't spend the rest of the weekend telling you that you should have listened!

For anyone coming from the UK on the Friday... do yourselves a real favour and use the Dublin Port Tunnel. Depending on your time of arrival the price changes - it's either 10Euro or 3Euro but I can't emphasise enough the utter convenience of bypassing north Dublin. You'll need another one Euro for the toll bridge at Drogheda, in case you're not aware. Home to Dublin Port pre-motorway and pre-tolls used to take three hours; it's now down to ninety minutes (shhh!!). Using the tunnel, the time saving to get out of Dublin is between thirty minutes and an hour, again depending on time of day.

Here you go: NRA toll charges

Well advised. The €10 tunnel toll on Friday evening is great value. Not to mention the possibility of getting lost if you don't use the tunnel. One further piece of advice. Don't use GPS to come out of Dublin port. Just follow the signs for North and M1 via Tunnel. Tunnel is well signposted. GPS will not take you to the tunnel.
Looking forward to te weekend noe!
Olaf

Thanks Dai, that is a really helpful tip. 10Euro would have challenged my cunning coin holder for sure and I best put a 10 Euro note some where accessible (or maybe somewhere inaccessible as a protest against bikes not being free - worse the same price as cars and vans!)
Irish Eccentrics Norn Iron September 2014 - Page 3 Dublin10
Slightly bemused by the picture of the Dublin Tunnel on the NRA website. I know that we are all tired of the old Irish jokes, but I was of the belief that tunnels go under the ground/water. In England, we call the things that go over the ground/water "bridges". Perhaps this is some sort of above ground vehicle pipe a "bridnnel" or a "tunnidge" - I can't wait to find out, and that has got to be worth 10Euros all by itself!

NRA is the National Roads Authority manages the national route network and all of the toll routes. As in bridges, tunnels and motorways....I resume that's their logo. I think that's actually the bridge in Waterford on the N25. You would have passed that way on your way back to Rosslare last time.......Sure why would we show an ould concrete tunnel when we could be showing a lovely bridge and scenery to stimulate the imagination.

This also is the longest urban road tunnel in Europe.

I am sure its no different from a few other confusing things around the world.

Things can be a bit funny over here, sometimes to confuse visitors. We even had our own miles one time, known as the Irish mile or 'country mile' seventeenth century, instead of the UK mile at 1760 yards it was 2,240 yards (6,720 feet, 1.27 statute miles, 2,048 metres)

On the other hand a man one time could be stopped on the way home from the pub after 10 English pints and would tell the policeman he had 2 pints.

Over here we refer to those things that go over the ground/water as a K100. As the forum will tell you HoverK100 has a K100 that goes over water. Only in Kerry would you find that. Things that go under the water had to be invented 'submarines', attributed to John Philip Holland, an Irish engineer who developed the first submarine to be formally commissioned by the U.S. Navy, and the first Royal Navy submarine, the Holland 1.

He is widely regarded as the father of the modern submarine for his designs.

Joking aside, I think you're right Olaf - I remember riding over that bridge at Waterford, but you've gone and spoilt the surprise now!

By the way, when I collected the comfort seat from the previous owner, he gave me a Clymer manual and a set of brake pads(full set front and rear).

Does anyone need either of these as i have a manual already, and I've put a new set of pads all round on the K1100?

The pads fit the K100RS 16v, and the K1100

All going well it looks like you will be controlling the RV time.

Balbriggan Services on the M1 will be the meet point so when you come off the ferry you are following the trucks out of the ferry port and heading for Belfast. The tunnel was built for truck and freight traffic to take it out of the city and there is a ban on artics in the city so they pay no tolls. Once you go into the tunnel you are on the M1 so don't take any exits until you get to Balbriggan Services.

We estimate your arrival time at the Balbriggan Services will be about 6pm, by the time you get off the ferry. We may be a bit ahead of you but we plan to use it for a coffee and refuel stop.

If you still have my number you can send me a text to confirm ferry is arriving in time.

Olaf

Don't worry about protesting at the toll booths, our toll people are the friendliest tax collectors in the business.

I often stop,  put the bike on the centre stand take off helmet and gloves, root in pockets, walk to the window, ask politely for a receipt and reverse the process. The ensuring line of traffic then do the protesting about tolling bikes.

As for our tunnel..... It looks like a bridge to confuse the enemy. Now THAT'S military intelligence  Laughing

Olaf
Olaf,

OK, that all sounds good. I'll put the Balbriggan services in the GPS (junction 5 on the M1?) - but heed your advice to follow signs to the bridge-like tunnel. I reckon your estimate of 6pm will be about right. The ferry gets in at 5:05pm, and hopefully I will be one of the first off, but docking and other delays do eat up time and then a 30 odd minute ride plus 15 minutes delay at the tolls...I reckon 6pm won't be far off the mark.

As you know, I got your text, so all good for being able to provide updates once the adventure is underway.

Hi Corkboy

What do you want for the Clymer manual?
Not sure if the pads would fit a K100LT or not, other wise I'd take those off your hands too (mine must be due a change soon)

Balbriggan services - look for the 'Applegreen' signs (the name of the service company). It's not hugely well signposted as Balbriggan services.

Cheers Dai - I assumed Applegree and Balbriggan were one and the same services, but appreciate the confirmation. It wouldn't be the first time I've gone to the wrong place!

Lads, anyone there with the hotel booked and not having a roommate to share with? A colleague of mine seems to be interested in coming but the hotel deal seems to be over - he was quoted some crazy price for a single room by the hotel yesterday.

Thanks in advance.

Hope the weather next Saturday is as good as today.
Took a wee run to Donegal. Brilliant!
Avoided the motorway, lots of nice bends and great scenery around the lakes near Enniskillen. Roads nice and clear, the grockles(tourists) have almost disappeared. Only met a few bikes, mainly BMW's.
Was thinking.
Maybe next year's Norn Ireland autumn run could head that direction?

Excellent idea John - there are many parts of the country not discovered yet. when travelling from Sligo towards your place 2 years ago we drove through some nice scenery. Lough Derg is a place not to missed on the way back to the South then.

Hi Reg,

Great you are coming over. At the moment the target is M1 Applegreen services at Balbriggan for 6pm, you can work backwards from that. Its good for a coffee petrol stop and we will be meeting Paul Lipscomb and 88KE there. I think also Sgmayhew (Stephen). I will contact Stephen just to make sure.

I went past this service station yesterday at 17:50 and could see all the vehicles that had obviously come off the Dublin boat heading North.

So all being well Paul should be at the station for 18:00.

Stephen beat me to it....

Bjorn, at the risk of being interfering I am thinking you will be putting your wife in the pillion for a straight run to Balbriggan. I know you and I can manage that fine but I think you should give a thought to making a stop on the way and maybe a lighter lunch so you can hit the road early. 6pm at Balbriggan is just about 2.45pm leaving your house on Friday evening. Or else maybe if you end up half hour behind is ok too. All I  am thinking is if you she is on the back for 4 hours straight we wont be thanked. As you are going M9 you wont be seeing us at J14.

I think an hour 15 will do us from Balbriggan to Kilkeel.

Olaf.

Well, the plan is to stop for fuel and coffee in Leamybrien first, and another coffee stop around Naas. We need to be refuelled more often than the bike - she does about 220-240 miles before the fuel warning light comes up Smile

what time do you want to meet in Dunkettle? I can finish work from 12:30, but 1pm might be more do-able.

And do you want to meet CluanSi and Tom in Mother Hubbarts on the way?

Hi Fintan,

Dunkettle is excellent. And yes Cluain Si has asked about meeting up too.

My thoughts.

1.45pm: M8 Dunkettle. Leave 2pm?       [Pat O'D, Corkboy, 92KK]
2.45pm: M8 Cashel Mother Hubbards. Leave about 3.10? [Cluain Si, Tom O'Leary]
4.00pm: M7 Junction 14 Mayfield Services? Leave about 4.45? [Food stop??]
5.55pm: M1 Applegreen Balbriggan Services Leave about 6.15? [Paul Lipscomb, 88KE, Bjorn, Ringfad, Sgmayhew, Reg]
That should put us at Kilkeel about 7.45pm. [Comberjohn, Dai, Markzz, Eugene]

Apologies if I forgot anyone, doing this from memory. Electric Monk? Eddie Clutch? Trapper?

Looks like the weather will be ok for Saturday.
Don't worry about getting a tan, but it should be dry.
Looks like the Cork riders might need the waterproofs for Friday though.
But they have been known to be wrong before.  sunny

Mmm. That was interesting and thanks for the heads up. I had packed up my bag this morning and decided to add in an extra change in case it rained on Friday. Anyway on foot of this I just checked our map and we have a rain risk Friday that seems to disappear once we get to Dublin as the east coast is looking clear.  So its only those of us on the M8/M7 seem to be highest risk, Bjorn being further east looks clear too....

Not heavy but its there. Being on an RT not too worried about getting wet. Already sent some meet up times out but they will be fine even if its wet.

Its worth it if we get good weather up there...!

John,
funny, since I bought the K1100LT I don't seem to need waterproofs. Very Happy
except when I slow down, or stop.

I bought waterproofs in 2010. Never used them despite using the K in all weathers. Only time I could see them being needed would be heavy traffic slow riding in torrential rain. My textile gear keeps me dry even in that.

I dropped an email to the hotel to let them know we planned to be there for about 7.45pm and that it was likely there would be about 15 of us for dinner and suggested 8.30pm. Emailed to those I have email addresses for.

I would like to try and give them an accurate number so feedback would be appreciated..

I have some dietary requirements in my head...

How about Saturday morning? Breakfast for 9am?

Dai, I am planning to pick up some lemon sole here on Friday just before I leave as there might be more than one taker for this [I have a travel box with ice packs to keep things cool and yes it fits in the K].......might drop some at the hotel as I quite like it for breakfast. We have a really good fish shop here and the weather at the moment is good for availability.

I'll be there. Dai is travelling down with me.
I've sent a text to Markz about it in case he hasn't seen this.

I still have the K100 banner which I now have to send on to Sidecar Paul. I will bring it and would be indeed great to get a good group photo. We won't have good daylight Friday night but will try anyway on Friday and also on Saturday morning. The Banner was sent up from Australia and has even been to France! It has been well minded.
