I still have the K100 banner which I now have to send on to Sidecar Paul. I will bring it and would be indeed great to get a good group photo. We won't have good daylight Friday night but will try anyway on Friday and also on Saturday morning. The Banner was sent up from Australia and has even been to France! It has been well minded.

ATM it looks like I'll be missing the Saturday run. I'm due to go flying in the afternoon but that's weather-dependant. Unfortunately something else has come up too; while stripping wallpaper in the biggest room in the house around one-third of the plaster detached itself from one wall. My neighbour is a plasterer and he says he can repair it on Saturday, so if I'm not flying I really should be playing labourer for him.

Been there with the wall paper, common problem and happened me when I was doing my parents house. Check out the remaining plaster, if its any way hollow it will come off too.

We know you will be doing the same thing Saturday. Getting plastered.

Looking at the BBC forecast....looks like I'm going to be dodging thunder showers on my ride up through Wales tomorrow, but look at that high pressure just pushing down right over Northern Ireland on Saturday and Sunday and promising good weather for the meet. Nice one Comberjohn!!

I guess I'm the only one coming across from the larger part of the UK (or perhaps not quite so United Kingdom depending how the vote goes today).

Raring to go and travelling light (no camping gear). Looking forward to it.

Paul,

We got a rain forecast too for our trip from Cork.

Seems like Comberjohn has kept the sunshine up his corner for the weekend.

For what its worth our weather map is not showing the thundershowers across your way but there is a risk of a shift. I have been following it a few days and this evening its telling us a bit more rain for tomorrow than it was suggesting yesterday.

No rain for Saturday and Sunday........so your trip back should be good.

Since a little rain tomorrow, or more depending on which side of the water, a little satirical wit...

Race with a Harley

I raced a Harley today and after some really hard riding I managed
to PASS the guy. I was riding on one of those really, really
twisting sections of mountain road with no straight sections to
speak of and where most of the bends have warning signs that
say "MAX SPEED 50 KPH".

I knew if I was going to pass one of those monsters with those
big-cubic-inch motors, it would have to be a place like this where
handling and rider skill are more important than horsepower alone.

I saw the guy up ahead as I exited one of the turns and knew I could
catch him, but it wouldn't be easy. I concentrated on my braking and
cornering. Three corners later, I was on his mudguard. Catching him
was one thing; passing him would prove to be another.

Two corners later, I pulled up next to him as we sailed down the
mountain. I think he was shocked to see me next to him, as I nearly
got by him before he could recover. Next corner, same thing. I'd
manage to pull up next to him as we started to enter the corners but
when we came out he'd get on the throttle and out-power me. His
horsepower was almost too much to overcome, but this only made me
more determined than ever.

My only hope was to out-brake him. I held off squeezing the lever
until the last instant. I kept my nerve while he lost his. In an
instant I was by him. Corner after corner, I could hear the roar of
his engine as he struggled to keep up. Three more miles to go before
the road straightens out and he would pass me for good.

But now I was in the lead and he would no longer hold me back. I
stretched out my lead and by the time we reached the bottom of the
canyon, he was more than a full corner behind. I could no longer see
him in my rear-view mirror.

Once the road did straighten out, it seemed like it took miles
before he passed me, but it was probably just a few hundred yards. I
was no match for that kind of horsepower, but it was done. In the
tightest section of road, where bravery and skill count for more
than horsepower and deep pockets, I had passed him. Though it was
not easy, I had won the race to the bottom of the mountain and I had
preserved the proud tradition of one of the best bits of Brit iron.

I will always remember that moment.

I don't think I've ever pedalled
so hard in my life. And, some of the credit must go to Raleigh
cycles, as well. They really make a great bicycle...

If you pick us up on the way we reckon Newry about 7pm.

If on your own exit M1 for Newry and head for Downpatrick on the A2. Do not go off the A2 for any reason. When the A2 goes through Kilkeel it takes a laft. At that point don't go left, go right instead.

Very short distance about 100m there is a junction to left. Take that. The hotel is on the opposite corner. You will see it as you go left.

Comberjohn seems to have done a good job of the weather for the weekend. Trouble is he now appears to have dumped all the rain down south for tomorrow. Anyway we have a now thundery forecast centred over Pallasgreen which may catch us up as far as Kildare. I can't see any way of avoiding unless we go earlier and take a longer stop up at Monasterevin or Balbriggan. Our times are fine for slower wet weather riding but . . .

I think poor Bjorn is more exposed to it as he is leaving later but he will be further east.

As a token of appeasement Comberjohn I had a word with the baker tonight in the hope of reducing the weather effects although auntie Aga is still on summer holidays for another few weeks I think. Will see the fishmonger in the morning!!

Boy, there's no pleasing some people.
Besides, was reading earlier in this very thread about the ruffy, tuffy K bikers who shrugged off rain.  Irish Eccentrics Norn Iron September 2014 - Page 4 178468

Had a moment of panic this evening when trying to remove the front wheel to get the tyre changed in the morning.
These modern thingys need a 22mm hex to unscrew the axle and had visions of running about tomorrow to find one. Irish Eccentrics Norn Iron September 2014 - Page 4 259495
The front tyre is totally knackered.
Had a moment of clarity and was able to use a smaller box spanner tapped into the hex. Was then able to remove the axle. Phew!

We did. Or rather, they did - I feel like I've had a brick thrown at me after removing the plaster from an 18ft x 7ft wall. I saw them off from the garage/gas station in the village at about 10.00am this morning. Jealous? Not me. 🇳🇴

What he didn't say about his lovely wife was, that when she fell asleep in the sun(yes, really!) at Carnlough, it was suggested that we wheeled our bikes around the corner for when she woke up. Evil or Very Mad

Thought I would be the first to post a few photos of the run yesterday.
Think there was about 18 bikes and 20 bodies and a great time was had by all. According to my trip, we covered a total of 243 miles. Probably could have done it in less time but once these guys stop and start talking, its hard to get them moving again. Herding cats springs to mind.
We had a great craic at the meal on the Friday night in Kilkeel and the newbies got the chance to put faces to names.
Welcome to the Eccentrics Dai, Eugene(Sqig60), Reg and Paul.
This morning I met up with Olaf, Simon, Bjorn and his wife in Newcastle for a coffee before they headed off.
We all sat outside my favourite cafe in the warm sun on the promenade drinking coffee, looking over a glassy sea watching all the bikes going past. Even was several microlights flying low over the sea.
Does it get any better than this?
By the way, Will. Your son, Alex says he wants to live in the North. You better bring him to the Christmas Brunch. He's obviously got good taste.
And the weather! What can I say. Sorry about Friday lads, but the sun was shining here.
Next year, Enniskillen Lakes and lunch in Donegal town.

Thanks guys for a great ride out - well worth the effort of hauling my butt up from deepest darkest Somerset for the Norn rally. Really nice to meet a whole load more of you Irish Eccentrics and a pleasure to ride/socialise with you all. An impressive turn out.

A cool ride down down to Dublin at the crack of dawn this morning (left Kilkeel at 5am - tried not to be too noisy!!), but roads were dry, no traffic, ferry was on time, crossing couldn't have been much smoother and another lovely load of sunshine for the run home - got home as expected at 5:30pm (albeit with an unenjoyable, but intentional, 117 miles thrash down busy motorways).

933 miles door to door.

Pics/video clips to follow, when I have the energy....but I should sleep well tonight!

I really enjoyed putting faces to usernames and real names. Many thanks for an enjoyable night on Friday. I was so envious of you  guys heading of for the run on Saturday. Well she admitted she fell asleep on the bike as well so I offered her the same layout as with Gerda - a luggage strap around our waists, just for sure. On the other hand it tells me she felt quite safe behind me so this is good.

As for the username / real name I'm the easy one: use my own name as a user name and it is quite unique here in Ireland. Chances of another person called Björn to turn up here are slim and none Smile

Right, we are now officially spoilt with the weather!  I don't know how many virgins you sacrificed John (or where you found them based on the ladies we saw on Saturday night What a Face  ), but it was worth it.

I had to ride back to Cork with a scarf up to my sunglasses, otherwise I would have had third degree burns. It was a shame really, as you could smoke a cigarette behind the LT fairing.

It was a cracking weekend Grommit, and it was great to meet up with everybody again, and meet the new faces.

That coast road, the A2 is a thing of beauty, with brilliant coastal stretches, and then heading inland through some great twisty sections, before coming out in Ballycastle, to enjoy Philly steak, followed by icecream, and gazing over to Scotland. As I said to John, I would surely kill myself if I lived up there, as i would just get faster and faster until I fell off.  That doesn't mean that I won't be scheduling a trip up there next year to do it all again Very Happy

I then cut inland, on a different errand, on the way back to Doagh (pronounced Doaghh -phlem-, and not Duu), and then down the M2.  The gps then brought me cross-country through some amazing back roads, the B25, on to Katesbridge, then up to Rathfriland, and over the Spelga Dam (real dambusters feel to the place), before dropping down to Kilkeel.

Thanks again for a great weekend. Both my and the LT's batteries are recharged.

Have to try and post some photos too.

Left Comberjohn around 1pm to head off to Dromaroad which I duly found. Then found my way from there across the Mournes on some rather scenic routes to Castlewellan. Sunshine all the way and eventually left Castlewellan at 6pm in glorious sunshine. Hit the M50 at 7.30pm and at 9.30pm hit Bewleys at Newlands Cross for tea and petrol. Left there and straight home at 4000rpm on the motorway on a perfect evening, no traffic, it was all stuck at Newlands Cross.

Was a great weekend, we excused Comberjohn for dumping the rain on us on Friday but I suppose he had to put it somewhere. It just proved the value of the K barn doors fairings, despite the torrential rain I was dry when I got to Kilkeel, apart for my gloves getting a bit damp. Sunshine for Saturday was perfect, Sunday morning in Newcastle is just an institution it seems. Comberjohn should have been a politician. He goes to Newcastle every Sunday morning to see all the bikes while supping excellent cappuccinos on the seafront. He takes the dog for a long walk every Sunday morning. A bit like the young fellow whose Dad took him to the zoo, when he got home he told everyone if was great and he loved the animals. And then Johnny says 'And Daddy loved the animals too, especially one that was 50/1'!

A great weekend and seems we are on for Christmas meet up on 27th December. I will bring extra Christmas puddings this year. Must check Stradbally Fayre will be open that day. 11am I guess and bring bike/car/wife/dog/girlfriend/Alex! see if I can get my son to go too, let him drive.

I had a real eye opener on Sunday afternoon and it put a special stamp on the weekend and how precious life is. As Comberjohn knows I was researching a bit of family history and after I left him I was in a cemetery on a sunny south facing slope with a clear view and sun shining down. I walked across one part and there was a young guy, I thought he was lying in the sunshine as there were headstones and grass strips. Anyway we got talking as he was in quite a bad state and I was worried for him. The headstone was for his Dad, who had died of cancer in December 2012, at 54 and today was his Dad's birthday. I was thinking and said his Dad was just a small bit younger than me, he opened up a bit about times shared and times he would never share, about things they had done together as friends despite some more turbulent years when he was a rebellious teenager. Made me think of my own son. Anyway we chatted for quite a while about what one can do in life, maybe pass on the good things to his own daughter who is 3 and that life is a lot more about the times one shares with family and friends than about how much money or success one gains. Funny how life can be, important to enjoy ones times with family because the tomorrow may not always come.

Made me appreciate our weekend a little bit more.

Just applied for a new rotation so October is very uncertain yet - I'll keep an eye on it and will do my best anyway. Christmas time is miles away but keep that in mind as well.

Loved the part about the virgins Fintan - not that it would be easier to find them here in Cork Smile
