Has anyone stripped the K100RS mirror/indicator assembly down to its smallest components?....I could pull it apart but I imagine the broken bits would explain how I should have done it....trying to avoid that they are too pricey to replace.
I want to get this bit out...

That piccy is of the tail indicator, the mounting screw is on the rear side of the housing.

At the front indicator a single mounting screw is at inner end of the lens.
Pull the lens out in the same direction as the screw, (it's a small hook at the outer
end of the lens).....the gasket could be a bit sticky, a small amount of force could be needed.

That is as far as I can get into mine too. I am just about to take them apart again to fit the LED light panels for the indicators.

I kind of assumed they were clipped together as you cannot get to the workings unless the plastics are separated...and of course no screws or rivets....mmmmmmm

Klompy, the two halves are glued together and don't come apart easily.

Paul.

now why did they do that....a couple of screws would have sufficed...may have to retrofit some fasteners after I have pried a donor mirror indicator assembly apart....will take pictures as I destroy one for a good cause...

The only time they come apart is when you are showing someone how they are glued together so well they dont come apart.

I have had some success with the RT/LT type by giving them a twist and that sometimes breaks the glue away then clean them up and use a stanley knife to scrape it down to the black plastic where it glues together and use super glue to stick them back together. 2 or 3 places with a small dab and when you decide you want it to stay run some into the groove and it's done.

When I painted my 85rs I just gently pried around the edges all around....sooner or later you find a couple of weak spots and the 2 halves start to separate. The further around you get, the easier it gets to break the glue joints. Both of mine came apart relatively easy as no one had glued them up in a previous repair, I guess.
After the paintwork I just glued them back together with Testors model airplane (Styrene) cement & put a rubber band around them for a few hours till set.
They seem to be holding together fine.....I have not intentionally "stressed" them to test the glue joints

I just replaced the right mirror assembly on my 1996 K1100RS.  I have to say I have been disappointed at several stages during the process.  The mirror was completely missing when I bought the bike.  The previous owner said it was damaged when he dropped it in his garage.  I purchased an OEM "Mirror Assembly" online for just North of $200.  When I received it, I was dismayed to find that a "Mirror Assembly" does not include the mirror glass.  I called the dealer, and after some checking, I was told that indeed the mirror glass does not come with the "Assembly".  Personally, I would have called it a housing instead of a mirror assembly.  Anyway, I ordered the glass and decided to paint the housing while I waited.  It came out beautifully, if I do say so myself.  I received the mirror glass, waited a couple of days for the paint to dry then started re-assembly today.  No instructions came with the housing or the mirror glass.  The glass did come with a spring clip, but no pictures or directions explaining how to use it.  I couldn't see how to access the back of the glass to install the pin.  So I hit the net.  The only video I could find was for a K100 but the guy briefly mentioned the pin for the 1100RS units.  I found this thread.  I thought "Awesome!"  I had found the information I needed.  Someone said something about separating the two halves of the housing.  Tried that, didn't work.  Someone else said, "Yeah, it's glued.  You really have to pry hard."  Did that.  Got it apart.  Screwed up my beautiful paint job.

Then I discovered (this is the juicy part) the new housings come with a spring clip pre-installed.  All I needed to do was press the mirror glass in until the clip snapped in.  No disassembly required.

Sometime this winter, when I'm not riding, I'll repaint the housing.  But for now, all I can hope is that my story saves someone else the grief I experienced because BMW doesn't include simple installation instruction or drawings (no translation required) with their replacement parts.  By the way, I own a repair manual for this bike.  It does not cover mirror replacement.

Ride safe,
Nolo

The RS mirrors have a habit of committing suicide at the most inconvenient moment like when a truck is following so many here have made security lanyards from fishing trace that prevents it going too far when they come detached.

Absolutely!  A quick trip to the sporting goods section of Walmart got me a six pack of 12" steel leaders.  That was an awesome tip I got from this site, and have already installed on the new mirror.

Thanks,
Nolo
