When I removed the speed sensor on my 1985 K100 RT to clean it one of the wires had come off. I re-soldered it and now I get nothing on the speedo. Checked for and had continuity on the wires and connection, connection is clean. Is there a way to test the sensor, maybe I applied too much heat to it while soldering? Anyone have one for sale?

I read somewhere that you take a working (switched on) soldering iron and place it real close to the sensor. It picks up the oscillating magnetic field of the soldering iron.

I just tried it on my bike (ignition on, as if you are about to start the bike) and the needle of the speedo sat just under 70 kilometres per hour.

So depending on your soldering iron, you'll at least see if the sensor is working or not.

I hope this helps.

Did you also clean the connector behind the right side cover?

Indeed you can test it with a soldering iron or some transformers. Just keep the sensor close to them and it should be picking up the changing electric magnetic field.

Checked and cleaned the connector behind the panel. I re-soldered both connections and still no go. I suspect one of the fine copper wires that go from the terminal down into the sensor body is broken. Impossible to see let alone solder. My hunt for a new (or used) sensor begins!

Otto, take a resistance measurement. It should be around 3kOhm IIRC. No resistance is an open circuit.

"0" resistance - open circuit - sensor will make a great fishing weight!

Bad and good luck! Have had no problems finding one. Have found 3 for under 40 bucks here in North America!

I speak French and English and understand some Spanish and Italian. Oh I also learned German as a second language when in High school.
By the way I learned English when I was 30 years old. As I always say I spoke only 3 words of English when I moved in Nova Scotia (Yes, No and F...ck)What a Face
The best way to learn a foreign language is to find a foreign girl friend. The English one became my wife!
Once in a while, I check other international forums.
I also share my finding on these too.
This is a give and take opportunity.

"The best way to learn a foreign language is to find a foreign girl friend"
Can I get a note from you for my wife explaining that Neil wants to learn another language?

"I also share my finding on these too"
A lot of people on this forum thank you for your efforts every day!

Neil,

Your note is in the mail and you are invited to Canada to learn as many languages as you want.
We are a multi cultural society and try to live happy all together.
The street where I live was a dead end street with only 9 houses. We had people from 6 different origin (and language) living in these 9 houses.
We had (and still have) very interesting parties when we meet and everybody bringing food (and drink) from their country of origin. I spent a lot of time with the Scottish because...... they always have the best scotch.

I knew there was a good reason to move from Nova Scotia to Scotland!

For hospitality I have not found better than a Scottish Constitution Masonic Lodge on Burns Night where complete with the skirl of the Bagpipes as the Haggis is ceremonially brought in and the Address to the Haggis, much Scotch is consumed. In my mind right now I can hear my friend Jock Mackie deliver his excellent rendering of the Address - Happy Days.
