Looks like my O2 sensor needs replacing on my Sweet Thing 96K1100RS. High fuel consumption, fouled plugs, low power. And its getting worse. I've not had a chance to put the meter on it yet as I don't have any gear with me here in Sydney.

My initial thoughts....

  • Get a second hand sensor off ebay, but there don't seem to be too many advertised here in Oz, secondhand or new for the K1100.
  • Christmas looming and I don't think I have time to wait for delivery from overseas.
  • From what I've read, the Bosch sensors are not reliable (??)
  • Suggestions on other forums say you can use just about any sensor providing it has a 4 wire connection and it looks the same (??) and if the plug is not the right one just cut it off and solder the old one on (??). This one from Supercheap looks the same.
  • Is it common that they get blocked or is that just wishful thinking?

Here's a link to the realoem part (#21) #11781464492
Looks like its used on all 16V K motors as well as the R1100.

Is there a work around till I get back from Victoria after Xmas/NY? Just looking for options Smile
A post on Motobrick (Johnny) said they removed the sensor and temporarily installed a spark plug. (??)
This looks like a good read on O2 sensors.

Any suggestions/advice/help much appreciated
Cheers

Realoem says my VIN has an O2 sensor but there's a pot instead. I'll look else where for the problem starting with the temp sensor and connections.

EDIT: or should I be adjusting the TPS and pot?

No they didn't. The US market might have had them but I know of a few Euro 16v, including my '91 and none have o2 sensors.

Probably is no help to you though.

Correct Bob.

I did reference realoem in both my posts above which does indicate that the O2 sensor is fitted to other 4V models as well as the R1100. Wouldn't be the first time it's been wrong.

I'd sorta worked that out today and moved on. But thanks for the input.

Are you referring to cleaning the injectors Keith? I don't think it will be those mate, as all SPs are fouling the same.
I'll be removing the tank in the morning to go over all the connectors, especially the Motronic plug. Hopefully it will just need reseating. Failing that I'll check the fuel return for any anomallies and then see if I can test the Temp sensor.
They are the only things I can think of that would lead to an overdose of fuel.

Yeah, I probably pasted the wrong link, but your'e there.

It'd be interesting to see the the values you settle on for the pot.

No I mean the O2 sensor, I thought it could be cleaned.

Hey Keith. We worked out there is no O2 sensor just the potentiometer. But you're right. If it had a sensor, cleaning it is one remedy to try. The realoem data for my VIN says it has one fitted but I think they came as an option with the cat.

Yesterday I disconnected the Motronic plug and gave it a good clean and reseated it firmly. Took it for a short spin and I have to say she ran very nicely, and no smelly exhaust. So I'm hoping that was the problem and its now fixed. Will be out for a longer ride this afternoon and heading up to Newcastle for the day later this week (2 hrs each way) so I'll have a better idea about fuel consumption after a good run.

Thinking back to when this started, I remember a couple of months back (and I've only used a tank in this time) I hit quite a large divet in the road as I was hammering thru a corner. The bike took a considerable lurch to the right and recovered nicely. I'm thinking that this may have dislodged the Motronic plug enough for it to loose connection with something like the temp sensor.

Ungaas.... If I have a fix, I'll be leaving it at that for the time being. Thanks, I have some light reading over Xmas and will have a play with it and make adjustments if its needed but hopefully not this week. Been very busy up to last weekend and now itching to get away for a 2 day ride down to Victoria for the festive season. I haven't been for a decent ride for about 4 months.
