Just very curious. Smile

Can the upper fairing live by itself?

I just got this. I will ride it stock at least a season. But I can't even find a pick of one ridden without lowers, but I do hear about guys who have ridden them.

TY, sirs

I have ridden the RT without the lowers and in the hotter places a lot of owners take off the lowers. Not sure of the RS but the RT has mountings at the frame beside the radiator which support the upper or main fairing so it stays stable enough.

If you don't do your own servicing its worth removing these lowers before dropping it off, makes the guys job easier.

Heres what I did to my mongrel

Been using it as a mild adventure bike, but will be converting it back to RS trim soon, but keeping the trimmed back fairing without lowers or liners.

If you dont trim it back to the mounting brackets, you have these crazy sharp points that poke right into the soft bit under your knee cap all the time. Not that comfy.

you might find the upper fairing brackets near the radiator a bit flimsy , letting the fairing move around a bit
they can be replaced with something more substantial which almost eliminates rocking and bounce in the fairing
just a heads up

@Olaf Thank You!!!

@Floyd, wow I like your bike Smile Exactly what I wanted to see. I finally understand your trimming, which I did not notice at first. That really helps.

@Charlie: nice brackets! Gerty looks very clean 85 K100RS: what does it look and ride like with lower side fairing panels removed? 112350

The hottest part of the summer will be past by the time I get her going, so I'll maybe appreciate the warm design. I'm at 6,000 ft in Idaho. I will probably love the design LOL Maybe I need the belly too Wink

Any tips or links on fairing repair, painting etc appreciated.

After looking at a lot of K100s in every form, I'm thinking polish tank to bare aluminum, paint fairing and front fender black, do custom black side covers (you see all sorts of these on the conversions), then pull off the tail rack and do the tailcone black, possibly reshaped on top back edge with a small spoiler.

I was also thinking of looking into reshaping the original upper front, but I could save it, and just buy a Duc like cafe faring and some of Charlie's brackets. First I will get to know the original, and if I'm liking it a repaint would do Smile

That rear fender under tail light is pretty huge. Might trim or pull it, and make a little one to hold the plate, then pull off blinkers and mount some small turn bulbs on the tail cone.

That might really clean up the bike for me, and I could turn my attention to a lithium battery and more minimal air intake.
