Hi All,

Has anyone in Oz successfully moulded new Odometer gears or has recently purchased some locally? A few of us SEQ members are currently weighing up options for sourcing replacement gears. Otto on Brisbane’s southside WAS still a source....anyone visited lately?

Looking forward to a flood of responses  What a Face

Regards

Dan

Hi Dan, In the distant past there was a gentleman in Spain that provided those gears.  I'm sorry that I do not recall his name or have his contact info.  I'm pretty sure others can provide the details.  If all else fails, contact the member who posts here on behalf of the BMW K-bike rally in Andalucia (?) Komando something-or-other.  Good luck.

From an old forum post, I found

http://www.repairsonly.com.au/BMW3.HTML#AN     (Sydney based)

A couple of months ago I emailed and got no reply, but phoned and spoke to him. He supplies the gears at $25 each, but you have to know which gears you need, even if you need all four, as they have different teeth count combinations, so I'm told.

When I get to the stage of disassembling my non-functioning unit, I'll be counting teeth and making an order.

A friend ordered some gears from one of the Spanish sources a while back, but they turned out to be for a mph speedo, not the km/h we use in Oz. The Spanish solution offered was for him to buy a new km/h set, with no return/refund for the wrong ones!

Bill

Thanks for the replies Gents, we will continue to weigh up options....I have looked on the Sydney guy’s site, it’s not the best website around that’s for sure.

If only they were generic gears.... 🙄

Dan

I saw somewhere, maybe even on this forum, reports of someone buying a bag of mixed nylon gears from a hobby shop and finding what was needed there.  Might be worth exploring this possibility.

Some of the gears come in a packet of hobby gears from Jaycar. Cheap at about $9 for the pack as opposed to about $25 each gear from other sources.

Thanks gents, currently leaning in that direction...hopefully we’ll be able to obtain the correct tooth count gears & go from there.

Do not know if I want in on this subject yet. My odometer does not work although speedo works fine.
I spoke with the gentleman at the BM shop at Stafford. He assured me he had the parts to fix it. If that helps

Pod, Dan is picking up a pack of assorted gears from me today. He is also getting a couple of assorted packs off Ebay. There is a instrument specialist at Salisbury Otto instruments who will fit gears to your speedo for around $200.00 that was about 10 years ago. You have to strip the speedometer out of the pod otherwise it will cost you more. https://www.ottoinstruments.com.au/ I am also trying a couple of longshots with the Trades Guild. If you are willing to wait we might come up with a cheaper solution.
Regards Martin.

Those gears would be perfect candidates for 3D printing.

Gryph that's one of a cuple of options I've been trying to look into, CNC, casting and 3D printing. However at the moment it's hard trying to catch up with the guys that can help in those specific fields. At the moment it looks like the assorted gears could be a winner. I had a Trades Guild industrial chemist look at my gear assortment and he said they are fine and that they have PTFE included in their composition.
Regards Martin.

Prints them in and also the starter button
Plus the badges

It took him some time to get the mixture correct for the UV

Matthew, those cheap hobby gears are probably nylon or Delrin acetal.  I have long suspected the gears in the odometer were designed to break away if attempts were made to tamper with the odometer reading.

Hi all
Just went through all this a couple of months ago... The Qld and NSW people were NOT very helpful at all. Gave me the impression it was all "too hard".

USA gears were expensive when postage is considered.
Went with:

http://www.hardtoptire.com/index_en.php

The website is a little bit of work but dealing directly with info@hardtoptire.com wa s great. Sent two sets of gears and two starter buttons including the spring etc. 80 euros.

Postage took a while due to Covid but gears were great. Recommend him

Regards

Mal

Amazon purchased SmallParts.com in 2005. Parts may be ordered from Amazon. Check small plastic gear assortments in amazon.

StandardK has successfully made up sets of gears from the $6.00 assortment with heaps of gears left over. Thanks to Dan I now have a set. He pinned and glued the stepped gears together and did a brilliant job.
Regards Dan.

Followed the advice given for a cheap fix. Made up the 34/40 gear set and replaced the 12T pinion from a bag of model gears sourced on ebay for about $10. Still working after 1200 kms.
