Hi everyone,

I decided to perform a spline lube today. Below pics showing how they look after I cleaned the grease off. Do the splines look good to you? TIA!

The teeth of the splines on the drive shaft have a small amount of wear and the drive unit looks quite good, so slop some moly grease(at least 50% moly) and shove them back in.

+1 on RickG's reply. When looking at the splines look at the top, it should be nice and wide and flat. From the end, they should have a trapezoidal shape, wear is indicated when they start to look triangular at the end.

Many of us use Hondamoly lube on our splines. The current version is 70% molybdenum. I lube my splines with it once a year, and they have held up very well. My K75RT is closing in on 100,000 miles and the splines still look new.

BTW, grab the end of your drive shaft with vise grips and give it a good yank to pull it out of the swingarm so you can lube the front end and check the universal joint for stiffness and notching in it's motion. Normally, the splines at the front end don't wear, but as long as you are in there, it's a good idea to show them a little love.

@Arlina, @RickG, and @Point-Seven-five

Thank you for confirming the condition and the suggestions.  Regarding lube, have you used the Castrol Molub-Alloy Paste White T as lube for the splines before or should I just stick with Staburags NBU 30?

The white paste has been superseded by the silver paste Molub-Alloy Paste TA. BMW part No 18 21 9 062 599.
Regards Martin.

MartinW,

Let me see I follow.  Are you saying that the Molub-Alloy Paste TA superset Molub-Alloy Paste T, which both are better than Staburags NBU 30?  If so, then I'm glad you pointed that out since I didn't what was the difference between the T vs the TA.  Thanks!

Everyone seems to have their favourite. I think that as long as it has a high moly content 50%+ and you lube at least every rear tyre change you're fine. I've had my Brick for 20+ years and 178,000 K's and until the Castrol white T was superseded by the Silver TA I used it, I'm now using the silver TA.
Regards Martin.

@Point-Seven-five,

I remove the swing case to better yank the shaft, but I still cannot pull it out.  Is there any clip that I need to remove first?

There is an internal snap ring so just give it a solid jerk and it will come off, be sure to seat it back when replacing it.
