Just one of those mornings. Looks like the muffler is going to need to go off to the shop as it's cracked around where the headers join in. I'm told this is a very common occurrence on the Mk. I's.

Yeah, Charlie pulled it off this morning and had a good laugh. It had a very small hairline crack and all this on/off for the header studs, exhaust shield and whatnot finally popped it open for real. Good news is I have a line on an exhaust shop in Vancouver and the owner said he could do same day turn around for such a small job. Smile I'm thinking I will pay the 6% to get the throttle cable overnighted to the dealer so it should be here tomorrow as well.

Good thing I talked to Jim out at Portland Motorcycle. Great guy and he has schooled me on so many things brick. As my bike had the original two piece throttle cable it will need a new cable and the throttle update kit as well. I will post the exact items and install once the parts arrive hopefully tomorrow.

Jim C is probably one of a handful of BMW spare parts guys left in the world who'd know about that cable update...as you know he had a 1985 K100RS that he rode to work 99% of the time (unless it snowed in Portland - a rare event) until he bought a red 16V. He taught me a thing or two. His part number recall is astounding. Strewth!

Looks like the triple tree cap is going to have to be trimmed to fit the new throttle adjuster. Need to see if I have a dremel bit that will do the job without mangling it.

85 RS restoration (part #1) - Page 11 Dscf1716

OG

Just a little trim with the utility knife did the job. It is very tight with the new cables and adjuster, but it does all fit.

Any tips on the main front brake line from the resevoir to the top of the triple tree. It is just giving me fits! Washers on both ends of the brake bolts and torqued down to 7 nm and they just won't stop leaking. Grrrr.

Have you fitted new washers or anneal the old ones by heating to just red and quench quickly in cold water, makes them go softand conforms better when tightened. New ones are easier.

some news ....well at least ....i flushed out the piston/lever end from outside the cylinder with degreaser after removing the brake lever
whilst moving the rod ,till i could get some squishing eminating from the master cylinder / seal at the back where the rod pokes out of the body .....cleaned it all up with a rag .....then went for a ride up and down nebo (nebo is a 31k long windey mountain road one way ......and used the front brake lots) ......so far no oil contamination present anywhere ....but i know itll be back soonish

(i figure the dirt and crap that had caught in the rear rod seal nearest the lever was flushed out a bit from the degreaser and a new seal formed )

i will get some funds together and put an order in to the bins in the not too distant future .....

It sure is a good riders road. My brother lived at the township of mt Nebo and rode the road every day to work and back on an R80RT he never wore out the middle of the tyre just the sides. He used ro round up all the flatheads on sports bikes and show them how it was done.

M/c doesn't look that bad. More concerned about the bore in the right control mount. Will clean things up and take some measurements later today and see where I'm at.

Cleaned up fairly well. I'm thinking it's the rubber as per usual.

That GoobChewb video clip of Mt Nebo gives you some idea of the ride and the road but it is far better in reality - by having a good look around once in a while instead of that pencil point focus on the tarmac. That repetitive background music the vid producer chose is trance-like and will have anyone asleep inside of five minutes unlike actually riding Mt Nebo on a motorbike. And, yes, OG, the traffic is usually pretty light. I choose a weekday because the idiot hoons and the cops are out in their numbers at the weekend.
