No worries Halo as I kind of expected there were going to be issues with the rear as the front has felt a bit twitchy even though things have checked out Ok so far. I'm going to just be clearing again as I really like the look of the OEM parts after they have just been cleaned up, and I have been fairly happy with the Eastwood satin clear although I wish it were a tad bit less glossy, but no real big deal.

Got to say OG your swing arm cleaned up real pretty like, you do very good work Very Happy . Very happy with the KBS yes its pretty glossy and not like the OEM finish but I really like it, proberly not your cup of tea from your comments which I fully understand. Unfortunetly life has got in the way in the last few weeks with easter holidays etc, this weekends no good as well, I am trying to do a similar job as the bike to our 100 year old house in the hills and have scored an old V30 ditch witch for block leveling digging etc that I am picking up interstate and will consume the whole weekend. It is killing me though as I can think of nothing more rewarding than working on the old girl it's a real blast, anyway hoping to hit it hard weekend after next.

Can't get the FAG swing arm bearings here in town. Anyone have experience with the Japanese made NTN brand. Would run $19 a pop.

Thanks,

Someone over at Avid rider came up with this solution:

Replacing my swingarm bearings will from now on only cost me about one
tenth of the price of the BMW bearing.....and my solution has a dust
seal as well. The items used:

KOYO 30203.JR Tapered bearing
Spacer from steel with dimensions:
OD = 28mm | ID = 17mm | T = 4mm
And dust seal of dimensions:
OD = 40mm | ID 28mm | T = 7mm (ok not sure what the T was, will come back with that one).

You remove the cone from the swingarm (the thing that stays behind in
the swingarm when you have the bearing in your hand), fit the new cone,
fit the bearing (greased), put the spacer ontop, seal over spacer....and
away you go.

seems NTN (or other) 32203 bearings will be a direct replacement for the
swingarm bearings on our bricks. 17x17.25x40. The width on these is measured
differently on different sites, but it is an exact match for what we need.

Stopped back at Mcguire's bearing here in town after having the old bearings pulled and the NTN is not a direct replacement for the FAG and they could not source any other alternatives. Looks like I'll be handing over a nice tidy sum to the new dealer...

Cheap Chinese ? I know what you're saying but think it was a concern 10 yrs ago but now ? (especially with the swing arm , low speed non rotating ). I have done lots of bearing replacement in my job and noticed that name brand brgs sometimes come from Slovenia , Thailand etc. I suggest the chances are high you may end up with a DEAR Chinese brg and not even know it !
This is probably a subject for another thread .

Yes, mate I'm aware of how modern global manufacturing works today. Went back to the McGuires to actually look at one and it turned out to not be the correct 40x17x17 size either. After talking with shops all over town they have been unable to source this size for whatever reason so as it stands right now, unless you want to try a completely different bearing setup as posted above, this is just another one of those little areas were you can get hosed owning the old bike...

A quick question for you 85 guys: Do you have a little sleeve that goes over the clutch arm pivot pin to help align the return spring. Couldn't find it in the manual or fiche and was just curios if this is OEM or someones little addition.

Thanks,

Question for you guys with all the media blasting experience: I was looking into getting some of the glass beads to do some of the parts with a bit more rust and in need of something with a bit more abrasive without going all out with the aluminum oxide. How will this compare with the soda blasting and while I'm asking anyone used the walnut shells for removing paint?

Thanks,

Does it include an expanding cone suitable for the head bearings as well

I have a Sykes Pickavent set, and they cost circa £120 Shocked
