My bad mate. I meant to say the infamous threaded screws. Number two had to be backed out almost all the way to get it in balance and number three didn't have enough adjustment to get it right. Sad I'm going to turn into a pumpkin this evening, but I'll look over the new info and hopefully have time to re-check everything tomorrow evening.

Now that's an entirely different kettle of fish. Has anyone actually ever seen a kettle of fish and why would it be different from any other? Don't mind me, I've been up since 1am watching MotoGP from Indy and need some rest. It's nearly 10am here now. Shocked

From Wiki

kettle of fish - Meaning "mess, muddle," the phrase is from "a pretty kettle of fish," a corruption of "kiddle of fish," in which a kiddle is a basket set in the opening of a weir for catching fish.

Thanks for all the info guys! Went out early this am to reset everything back to spec and try again. One and two synced up easy, but three and four were reading 4+ and moving the air screw did nothing. Looks like those original intake manifolds I tried to seal with 1194 aren't taking care of business. Sad Surprisingly running pretty good with just the first two sorted so I will bleed the front brakes this evening, pop on the headlight and head on to DMV tomorrow on lunch break.

LOL lol! You can register a donkey cart in Oregon! Back in '02 when I lived there I had a chopped up R1100RS frame with a written off insurance title, built up from parts from various years/models and the DMV bloke on SE 82nd Avenue (an expat Pom no less) allowed it through because I told him in passing I worked at the local BMW dealer and had access to the 'latest technology'. The picture to your right is that very bike!

BTW, nice looking motorbike you've got there, mate! I'm liking that yellow over black theme.

It's good to have a decent spare parts man to get you the right parts and to help you through your mechanical troubles. A lot of it is because we see what sells (and what is returned) and what does sell we often remember the part number of, especially if we are reordering an item more frequently. I dunno how many times over the years whilst working in motorbike or auto workshops a mechanic (technicians they're known as these days, and rightly so) would sidle up to the parts counter and ask if we knew what caused this or that type of mechanical problem they were having and we'd base it on what items we sold a lot of. PCM (parts counter man) diagnoses happen more often than you'd think. Did I mention this is the real world and that on occasion we stuff it up too!

I'm sure ol' Jim was as happy as a pig in mud. Cheers!

Here's our man.

Any front master cylinder of our bike's type used either a 13mm or a 20mm depending upon the number of pistons in the callipers, and not on whether it had ABS. Pre-four piston Brembos got the 13mm. You can use the K100 16V, K1 or K1100 master cylinder as I have done so long as you also upgrade to the later callipers. The right hand switch gear will attach with no dramas to the master cylinder assembly. But beware as there are a variety of variations in the fork leg's ability to accept those callipers and their requisite brake discs. I have my answer, and it works.

There are heaps of good, used master cylinder assemblies listed on the various Euro eBay sites. But be careful as you need the entire assembly: reservoir, lever, throttle cable, throttle tube, brake light switch and all to make it work on a K100 of your vintage. It can be a nightmare to interchange parts if you're not certain of it. You have to consider the cost/benefit ratio and whether it'll be really and better than it was before...proceed with caution.

Thanks mate. I was going to save that for later, but now that I've got to get a new front m/c I'm tempted to get the 20 and find some of the four post calipers, but will shall see as I've got start using the old girls for regular duty...is the 13mil a non-starter with the four pot calipers?

Lousy, spongy brake feel with the 13mm and the four pots...don't even go there. Plus they're intended for 305mm brake discs, not 285mm like yours and mine...you're opening a can o' worms. Grab a 13mm kit, unless your current master cylinder's bore is shot, as it's the easiest and least expensive way to go and consider the other bit later...after one of your mates has successfully upgraded. You would almost need an entire front end off a later bike.

yeah its confusing og ...the bins list abs and non abs also .( a big price difference ) ...plus the later series for the 4 pot calipers (i guess thats the 20mm type )

the difference between the 20 mm and the 13 mm for the 4 pot caliipers is that you will have to moove more fluid(with the 13mm ) so a big grab on the brakes could mean a lot of handle movement i guess og

Whether there's a 13mm master cylinder listed with or without ABS (for our vintage bikes) or not is redundant info for your bike since they didn't fit ABS until the K1/K100RS 16V came out in about '88, and they both used a 20mm master cylinder. The ABS 13mm is solely for bikes like the K75 and any model that retained the two-piston Brembos, but with ABS.

Dunno, can't see what the difference would be or why. It's just a pressure pump afterall, unless there's a physical difference and your ancillaries won't mate up to it...but that's all I know about that detail. Though just now looking at the Motobins images of the two shows a subtly longer 'snout' on the ABS version. If you go for the 20mm stripped down version of the master cylinder I have a spare lever, housing and plastic covers, which you'll need. You'll just have to buy a new throttle tube, cable, and TB end bracket, and didn't you just do that bit? See what I mean about a can o' worms.

if i remember correctly ....you were going to cut back the "snout " on your existing master og.....sounds like you may already have a abs model fitted .....go for the abs one mate ....

but i guess price will be a negotiating factor.

Great read Old bloke, I'll probably finish up treading the same paths as you to get my old girl running properly.

Two Wheels Better wrote:I wanted to see Pedrosa, Spies and Lorenzo on the steps, personally. Stoner's a good rider, no doubt, but what a bloody whinging sook. It's almost un-Australian! I'll just get out of the hail of empty beer bottles and rocks being thrown at me now.

Two Wheels better, I love a good racing debate, but I don't know you that well yet so will go carefully until I do.

How is Stoner significantly different to Gardner, Doohan, or even Corser? When was the last time you heard one of those blokes say: " The other guy was too good today"? That's right, hardly ever.

In fact the only international aussie racer I can think of who does/did was Bayliss.

I know that in your post you weren't comparing 'Stacey' with our other world champs, but a lot do and conveniently forget that Gardner and Doohan were both surely types when they didn't win and only lightened up after they retired, something Micheal Scott frequently referrs to in his writings.

I accept your point, but still want one of the fastest most determined guys out there to get a suitable reward for the effort he put in after a few years hard labour on the Ducati, a bike that few others seem to be able to get results out of.

Though I admire his dogged determination and riding prowess, and the fact that he's dragging nearly everyone in MotoGP along, I still think he's a sook, and can't stand listening to him being interviewed. Having said that, I hope he does well, which he will, no doubt. Can't wait for The Island, a Mecca for many. Now let's get this off a wonderfully rich resto post, even with our inspired points and counterpoints, so that we don't interfere with what OG's got going here.

I hear you mate... Thing is I really plan on using her thru the winter, except if we get some rare snow, to commute to work and some weekend independent contracting work. Since I'm having to do the wheel bearings, and it's looking like the head bearings as well, i was thinking it might just be time to suck it up and do the whole front end so as not have to worry about it shortly down the road. Well, I need to look into the total price for the consumable parts and upgrades for the old 95 Flea-bay fork. Also, was wanting to see how TWB likes his radial swap as well. Smile

Hey Folks,
Finally, have some time to get some things finished up on the old girl tonight. First order of business is getting the front brake up and working! Big thanks to Rob for getting me a complete m/c and all the attachments to me! I've basically have two and half of everything now plus a rebuild kit so hopefully will be able to get a combo that works. Also, going to tackle getting the front crank seal sorted as well. The new third gen seals are a bit of a finicky **** to install and I'm going to give Yankee's great little trick with the pill bottle a shot to see if I can get it right this time. Pics of all the fun to follow of course. Smile

Had to get another dual seat off flea-bay as I've just not had time to finish up my solo seat and send it off to Sargent for foam rebuilding. Embarassed
