My engine output shaft seal is leaking and I decided to make an experiment.
The oil level on the sight glass was almost up to the top of it (Overfilled).
I decided to remove the output shaft seal without removing the oil of the engine and see when it would stop leaking.
The engine is almost perfectly level, and interestingly, the oil stop dripping when the oil level was dead on with the center dot of the sight glass.

What can we conclude from this experimentation?
Don't overfill, and keep the oil level at the dot. Very Happy

I also came to the same conclusion re. oil level window etc. I used to fill mine to just over the dot and it consistently dropped down below the dot on a regular basis. Nowadays I top up to just level with the dot and it hardly ever seems to move. Obviously our old K's have their own method of oil level management - lol Wink

better add this to the did you know department, under engine management- oil management, now how does one say they did it? emperical observation? much better than the handbrakes observation of "bloody mental shed junkies" although perhaps not too distant an observation.

Very interesting - as my seal is leaking and the oil is (just) over the top of the sight glass (i.e. overfilled)

If I drain enough oil to bring it to the centre of the sight glass, what are the chances of this stopping the seal leak? (He asks with fingers firmly crossed).

The leak should stop when the engine is off and the bike is on the center stand.
As soon as the engine is running, it will leak again.

The dot on the sight glass is in line with the bottom of the outside diameter of the seal.
if the oil is up to the top of the sight glass, it's at the level of the bottom of the output shaft.

The repair has to be done ASAP otherwise if the friction plate gets greasy, you will have to replace it. This is not cheap ($200).

Don't like those odds at all Smile , but about what I was expecting.

Just rang my friendly neighbourhood mechanic (grumpy old b* if the truth be known).

Bike is booked in next week to get the seals done (he will replace the seal, o-ring, and gearbox seal), and will replace the clutch friction plate and springs while he's in there.

Now where did I leave those SWMBO finance request forms (in triplicate) and the special pen with the blood drawing nib. affraid

one of the advantages of the forum is that for folks "willing to give it a go" or with some mechanical knowledge . can benefit from other experiences and troubles, whilst on the repair path .

getting the mechanic to do the work ....kinda takes away that advantage of cost savings ....but "hoorah" for the guys that will do whatever it takes to keep our "old girls " on the road

good luck corkboy ..!

As part of the useless information section, if you overfill the oil level because you are parked on a river bank and the sight glass is far down in the hull and you are using the Irish method of "to be sure, to be sure" i.e we will add some oil to be sure, then add some more to be sure, the engine will produce great plumes of blue smoke on startup Very Happy

BTW Corkboy, I can pronounce Corkboy the correct Rebel way Very Happy Very Happy. If you get that K running come on down across the border to the Kingdom.

Might be good to see I have heard that a K has the same glide characteristics as a brick.
