Does anyone have an idea how much the BMW recommended kit is for setting ignition timing in UK?

Thanks Inge that really useful. May be a stupid questiob but could the test circuit decribed here http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/bvogel/K100/download/bike-wont-start.htm not be used? Assuning you had tdc - 6 and the LED went out?

They are almost the same at the difference that one uses 12v Leds, and the other is using standard ones (3.3v) whith a 9v battery and inline resistors to drop the voltage.
One is nicer than the other, but when you want to find where you have a problem you don't have the time to make testing material 'pretty'. You want to get an accurate result and both will give it to you.
