Bike is great when running but initially when driving off after starting its like something is loose or not engaging properly? otherwise bike goes great...Bike is new to me had it a few weeks it's done 56,000miles and was a police bike, so I hope it was well maintained in its past life.

Any ideas or is this normal K noise, its the first shafty I've had so I guess the transmission noises will be different. I'm happy to dismantle and fix anything having rebuilt a few bikes from the frame up.

Welcome Suicidalbadger. Slide on over to the members intr and say hello, as is the custom and practice on here. you need to do that anyway in order to get access to the technical stuff in the downloads section.

I get a bit of rachet noise too. I always put it down to the clutch. How severe is it?

Thanks 88KE, not severe just unusual, almost made me think I was dragging centre stand as it just goes away after half a turn of the wheel.

I also thought clutch but again a noise I'm not used to on other machines.

there is a damper in the final drive before the clutch and a spring loaded device on the input shaft of the gearbox .....i too notice that noise , but figure it to be the damping mechanisms comming into effect on that initial torque off the mark..

hope that helps...it seems pretty common

Yes Charlie I have same noise but only with cold engine. After warming up it disapear...

If it only happens pulling away the first time after starting the engine, it is probably the ABS doing its self test - a good clue is the ABS warning lights going out as this happens. The self test also seems to repeat at intervals when pulling away from a halt.
My ex-police K11 also exhibits this behaviour.

My K1100 does much the same thing only when its cold, I figure it's a bit of chatter in the drive line and besides aren't we all allowed to shiver a bit when we are cold.

Great, thanks for the replies, hearing that other people have the same noise from cold and that it's probably the ABS will stop me worrying as we head off for a 2500 mile trip soon...oil change today and we're ready to go. These bikes are quite impressive at eating the miles in (for bikes) comfort.
