Thanks Krambo. I appreciate the offer. I had also inquired of a BMW used parts dearler in California and found that he ahd a copy of a 049 key. In the end, I had a local Toronto locksmith manufacture 3 copies of a 049 based on photographs. They work great, and that's the whole point after all; now I can lock my panniers and secure them to the bike.

I only have a picture of one side but if you look closely you can see the groove in the other side

Yeah..Inge. Right. But..who really cares about an old liitle 30 years old pannier key? Why shouldn't we just throw this old luggage bags and upgrade them?
My doughters think I am kind of crazy..reparing or taking care of old family things.. But this is how I am. I am proud about getting back to life old stuff that have some sentimental meaning to me and keep my old bike(s) as it is..
That's the reason why I appreciate and I am so grateful to people like you guys, in this and other classic forums I belong, that offer knowledge and generously help..

Until I stumbled across this thread I didn't even realise that my panniers had a lock on them! After going outside in the rain to see if any of the keys I had fitted (which they don't) I read a bit more of the thread and realised that none of the keys that I got with the bike look anything like the one needed.

With it still raining, I went outside to check the code on the nearest pannier and found that I need a '059' for mine. Checked the front one on the other side and found it to be the same number. Hooray!

It was only after coming back in and reading a bit more that I realised that there are locks on all four of the catches and I needed to check the other two.



Thankfully those are '059' too, so now all I need to do is find somewhere I can get hold of a key from? Anyone got a spare/not needed one knocking around?

Thanks this post was helpful, wish i found it earlier.  I have a Funduro and bought some of these cases off a guy on craigslist.  I didn't realize they were so old.  He told me he had the key, but ended up not having it when i showed up.  I considered paying a locksmith $100 (estimate) to make me a new key for my cases.  After taking weeks to locate the key code on the latch (i'm slow... and didn't have this forum), I found the key code.  For some reason, my dealership couldn't find the key code when i brought the latches in,  nor find the key part number  (maybe all the guys there are too young).  People are selling keys on ebay for $20 and $30, but i found the BMW parts numbers.  My dealership WAS able to search the national stocks and locate a key in the east coast and order it for me, new from the dealer, for under $4.  Here are the part numbers:

    Thanks to this thread, I found out that the bags on my 87 have a number on them! Apparently I need a 060, if anyone has one. Fortunately, the bags all match; at least the 4 that are unlocked. The panier to Z rack latches are locked. Was not sure how I was gonna fix that! But now I know a 060 key will help. Sadly, one side has unsuccessfully been attempted to drill out. I think I'm going to attempt to remove the Z bracket from the bike, on work on it on the bench.
    What part of AL ya hail from? In about 1/2 hr north of the true L. A. (a bit over an hr above Panama City FL, just on the AL side of the line)

I have a key 060 (unless someone tells me it's 090) it doesn't have any other numbers on it. It seems the same as the 069 photo above when I zoomed it under my key. 

I've been told overseas posts take two months now because of the virus. 

It's too cheap to sell, if you pm me an address I'll cut two copies and send them.

Actually I've noticed 069 is different, but I think the profile is the same as 067 in posts above, but my key has two grooves on the numbered side, and one on the other, which is opposite to 067.

Went to a locksmith who said square ended ones were very rare nowadays. The end bit is different in two spots. Cause it's square and not ramped means the lock doesn't have pins so it should work is what I think he said.
