I bought a 1985 K100 from my neighbor, who had purchased it earlier this year and then taken it apart to clean and get it road ready again. He just turned 86 and decided he's "too old for this stuff" so I bought it from him. Now I am in the process of putting it back together again so my gal and I can get in a few rides before the snow starts falling. I will be checking in on this site for help now and then I am sure.

Welcome Tom,
You'll find lots of help here.  If there's anything I can do in my capacity as shade tree mechanic, I'm close by, right here on the Bench.

Is this a normal way to acquire a K? Its just I have a friend who acquired a K1200S in similar circumstances.
