Hi I need a bit of help here. Ive stripped down my forks ie off the bike, removed the stanchions from the sliders but not the stanchion internals ie spring etc. What I have found sitting underneath the top of the stanchion nuts/ top caps (?)  are two washers with four holes in. These are approx 3.7mm thick and appear to seat on the internal shoulder of the top caps. However the washers one in each stanchion are identical one seats perfectly and the other wont quite seat as there is a slight lip on one of the top caps. This lip doesnt look like any kind of wear groove as they're anodised and that looks to be fine. The result is the washer sits up off the main shoulder by about 4mm.

So my question is what are these parts as they are not shown on my exploded fork diagram and secondly assuming they are supposed to be there should they seat right down on the shoulder in both top caps. I remember one being hard to get out and had to be tapped out.

Any help much appreciated.

Steve

You'll also find them in drawings here , under 31–Front Suspension

The diagram seems to be the forks Im working on.
The photos shown in the link show the slight lip in one of the caps .09mm which stops the shim sitting on the shoulder. Any ideas of how I should resolve this. the shim sides dont look to be exactly precision made so maybe dress them up ? ( Neither of the shims sit correctly in the cup with a lip.

I wouldn't be dressing the shims until you have complete understanding of their fitment. Be patient. Somebody with relevant experience will chime in.

Your docx link doesn't work for me; pictures must be posted using forum software or links from a photo hosting site like imgur. Try using the photo posting instructions in the Forum Functionality section of the site. Of the forums I use, this site's system is the easiest for posting photos from a computer.
