Well on both my bikes the gear select display has bled and doesn't show me the gear I am in (can only see the edge of some digits. The solution will be to use a micro controller to decode the gear pinout (4 inputs each state unique) and then display the appropriate gear on the seven segment display, the circuit will include a dimmer for night just by sensing when the parkers go on.

I have chosen to show this and use off the shelf parts from JAYCAR Electronics (instead of the desecrate chips I use on my projects at work) in case someone else would like to try this mod eventually.
The cost so far is $29. I will wright the code and program, I have picked a tiny module that will fit well and just plugs into the usb port of a computer to program. I would also like to use this to read the fuel level and pass the info onto the display as the device can read analog as well as digital information(temp sensors etc) this then can switch on the 7L light for example with proper debounce logic to stop the 84 model false indication without the dash update of the 85 etc, it will work with the early sender & later models as well (I need both as have a 84 & 86 RS) .

Excellent detective work Halo!! I've gone and designed a dedicated circuit using CMOS components to perform the gear display and start circuit enablement. Have you considered how your Leostick solution can simulate the start circuit? Keep us updated, as Charlie says.

Went and picked up the fluids for the second time for the 84RS (first time was pinched by my newly acquired 86RS), however this time I was able to pick them up in style instead of a tintop.

I cleaned the muffler about 8 hrs in so far. I used the die grinder with the polishing wheel and the correct buffing sticks from the local tool shop, I had to use 800 to 1500 grit wet and dry on the worst effected areas.

Good work Halo.
8 hours eh.
I spent about 20 minutes on mine. I can live with it.

Maybe the extra bit is to keep the exhaust from dirtying up the back of the pipe.
Maybe he just wanted a chrome tip on the exhaust.

I am fairly sure that it didn't come from the factory with that bit hanging out the back. Maybe Rossco is right and it stopped that awfull black sooty stuff getting on the shiny stainless and making it look all dirty. Rolling Eyes

im guessing a little different version of stainless halo

a few of the british lads have done the polish job on theirs with some good results ....but to me it never seems the same as the muffler section ....

those metal freaks could give a good answer ...but im sorry i cant explain the differences mate ...i figure just a different mix of stainless steel

I would not mind one ... oh never mind. Oh look, there is a gutter.

Looks like someone beat me to the gutter.

In a previous life I was known to sleep there when drunk.

Pretty impressive polishing Halo. It must be a bit of a tedious task. With the level of detail you go to I can't wait to see the finished bike My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 15 112350

Great work Halo...as usual.

Hey Halo, can I ask a favour?

The knob person that I bought Barge Arse from didn't have the sidestand connected and now I know why. The damned thing won't fit!
My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 15 178468

It seems like the muffler has moved back about 10mm and the 4 bolts on the exhaust pipe's clamps "don't look right". One or two are wrong when compared to my RS. But I don't know if even if the RS' bolts are orientated correctly.
The Manuals aren't very clear although they do mention that the clamps only fit one way.

Can you please snap a couple of photos of how the bolts sit? Please, please, please!

Thanks in advance,

Added:
Did you know (not you Inge, as you probably do) that there are different clamps? The clamps for cylinders 1&3 are different for cylinders 2&4? Live and learn!

good link ...yet again inge

caferacer62 wrote:I found that if you put the clamps onto the muffler first you can see which way they go. That way you can see where the small tab that locates into a notch on the muffler tube goes. Then transfer them onto the header tubes and refit the muffler. Its a bit easier to fit the muffler back up with the clamps slid up the header tubes.

Try and put some sort of anti seize on the threads too, the heat does dry it out but at least it makes it easier if you have to undo them again.

give it a try blakey

Yes 88KE it is all of that but I figure 30 years of grime shouldn't be easy to remove anyway.
Sorry Blakey dozed off last night and missed the posts looks sorted anyway.

'Wonder Wheels' is a good start for removing the brown stains from stainless pipes and silencers. You'll need a lot of extra elbow grease to get them like Halo's though. Cool

Paul.

I saw on the net somewhere, that the extended tail pipe helps the exhaust gas get beyond the bike so there is less smell.

I was getting an exhaust smell when towing the camper trailer and it went away when I fitted a laser muffler to the k100 but I can't remember now if it stuck out futher or not. I didn't fit the laser to stop the smell but for the music it created.
