Sorry ausbrick got distracted there , by life I suppose. My experience of the forum
is that there is always a lot of to ing and fro ing on dates. I have to start saving now for my trip home.
A date, any date is a good place to start! I'll go with ONE forum members' preferred timeframe.
And the rest will either fit in or miss out. Auntie BB is when? Or you ausbrick?
Don't forget there is Dennis and Bushyintas to show you a good time too!
Bushy chose to live in Tassie so knows how this place affects one.
Dennis, I think, is a native and they are what Tassie is all about!
Sure the roads are superb, bugger all traffic even on wkends, the scenery is spectacular
but who takes that in on a Moto? YOU will, It's the age old problem , do it once for the view
then do it again for the.. rode!
It's the people you meet and the experiences you have interacting with same that Tassie does best.
Takers?

Any time works for me just need a couple of weeks notice. Self employed and it don't take long to load up the bike. Anyone know how long ahead you need to book  the ferry for a bike . A music festival fitted in would be good but the riding is what really matters for me so what ever suits the majority of interested k folk. cheers AB

Well here I am back in Tassie and letting you all know. I will be here for 4-6 weeks and in that time

we have the Forth blues Festival March 15th. I know this is a huge ask of the Q'landers who are the

most active at meets but the offer is there for anyone interested. Coordination of a group ride round the state

is unrealistic given our respective family/work commitments however pop on down in March and I will do my best

to show you My Patch. Bushy and Dennis I am sure will be able to contribute in some way to your trip.

Ghost no more

Time to start planning for a suitable date! Id suggest mid January 2015. That way I could do a trip to the Snowy mountains and the Karuah River Rally on the way back.

checkout the Fares for the Tassie ferry.
it would be good to see a group taking the banner south for the Vics and Tassie-ites to sign early next year.
and what a top place to be on a K.

put in my leave notice today for 12 - 25 Jan  2015, with room to flex.

without taking a complete spare K for service bits , just thinking of what might be handy to take
keeping in mind weight and space ( trailer in tow),
due to some items being difficult to source enroute and after hours. these will be quick fix items to repair enough to get us to reasonable help.

just thinking of common issues and easy tranportable parts for our old bikes.
definitely not taking final drives, gearboxes or any other heavy bulky items.

anyone with thoughts regarding basic stuff ?

K Things we've had fail or break while travelling(that have needed repair or babying to get us home):

K75s final drive and driveshaft spline failure
K75s stripped clutch spline/input shaft
K100RT sidecar clutch cable
K100RS-16v sidecar clutch cable
K100 frame (snapped right downtube)
K75s frame (snapped rear loop behind the top shock mount) -overloaded and rough roads
Lower shock mounting stud on rear drive
K100 starter motor brushes.
K75s ding in the front wheel from rough roads (tyre wouldnt seat, wouldnt hold air)

I really should carry a clutch cable.

some fairly serious works on the run there Al, hoping to avoid the major issues if possible, and enjoy the trip.

To quote TWB" you take the really important gear, the stuff you just cant do without and if you need a new pair of jcoks then use the credit card."
Rick , there are times the card only gets you so far , and I'm fairly particular on my choice of jocks.
I think I'll leave the heavy stuff at home , such as FD and splines.

apart from Shockie bolts, and starter brushes ,other things that have been known to cause issues that I had in mind are,
switch gear , mainly the right side .
clutch cable
 relays
"ding in the front wheel from rough roads (tyre wouldnt seat, wouldnt hold air)"
I already have this pre installed , as does Warren C ,and it currently takes up no extra space.
I'll pack a 5 lt fuel can , just in case. with some spare oil and 5 lt water
a small compressor
spare battery fully charged.
esky , don't forget the esky.

tyres are a common problem , and difficult to scource , but for the added weight and space is it worthwhile.
My wife ventured to Tassie a few years back, and her travel companion needed a new tyre ( due to road debris) within the first 2 hrs.
can you fit tubes to bike tyres as a repair option?
these won't take up too much space , anything else worth having on board?

With the sidecar I carry a toolbox (mostly ballast to be honest),some wire, duct tape, insulation tape, cable ties, fuses and not much more.

I broke the handlebar mounting studs on a trip once and had to ride for around 300kms with a bunch of heavy cable ties holding the bars in place till I got to Broome. The mechanic at the Honda shop was horrified.

Knowing the typical failures, now I'd make sure the starter had good brushes, the bike had good brake pads, clutch adjusted etc before leaving on a long jaunt.  My clutch cable failures have been more to do with cable rerouting due to running the barback clamps and needing a longer RT cable.  That was two different bikes though.

The Ghost calls Tasmania home.

The Ghost has tried to get a forum meet in the Island state, twice.

The Ghost will believe it when he sees K's coming off the Spirit.

But will he be there to witness and participate?

Stay tuned, the forum cogs move slowly and not always forwards.

But the forum does move, we meet up, change gears and talk splines and DeoxIT.

Go For, em! I mean Forum.

Wow thats a scary list of on road failures Al....

Broken from, stripped clutch splines, busted FD.....far out.

Will be sure to add a set of starter bushes to my next shopping list.....

My recently fitted front tyre (on K1100 rim) has deflated after about 2 weeks of sitting idle.....bugger. Ideas? Maybe just running a tube in it....

Tas is very close to the top of my list of places I want to visit next, and would love to do it on a bike. I have a feeling a van may suit the isle and its wonders (and my wife) slightly better, but the K will make great company.

Don't run a tube in a tubeless tyre unless you have no other choice, the tyre will chafe the tube and wear big holes in it.
I have had problems time after time with tubeless tyres because the tyre fitters don't clean the bead seating surface when fitting the tyre.  Now I fit them myself and carefully clean the seat and have had no more problems.

Fill a spray bottle with soapy water, pump the tyre up again and spray it all over, if its going down that quick you should see bubbles coming from somewhere, make sure you check the valve and valve stem too.

I just took a 20% worn tyre off the front of Maries 650GS, it was leaking right around the bead on one side (the soapy water told me so). We can only thing it's been run too soft at some stage and damaged the casing. Took it off and replaced it with another, didn't really have a choice. I'm not keen on tubes as they are harder to repair and more likely to get a puncture in the first place.

Of course it doesnt. Ive run tubes in tubeless tyres for years without any problems. Its probably not ideal, but it will get you home no worries.

thats right Waz , I'm sure most would agree with you.  1 week is tight ,
It would be great to share this experience with a few like minded K folk

"Quote, Definitely need 2 weeks ,
if you can be in melbourne on the sunday , ferry departs monday, so you are in devonport by tuesday and into it.
return trip , you need to be back in devonport by thursday for arrival back in melbourne on friday, leaving you the weekend to get home.
this gives you from tuesday morning till thursday evening the following week to discover the Apple Isle.
so I guess no late night partying on sunday night before getting on the ferry.Tasmania 2014 - Page 2 Sleep"

for those abroad , Tassie is our version of the Emerald Isle , some great roads to ride, with splendid scenery as well.

C'mon guys, get organised and get over here.  The ferry "Spirit of Tasmania" (google TT Line) leaves daily from both Melbourne and Devonport (2 vessels).  Set the dates and I'll meet you all and arrange some routes etc.  I reckon I could swing some time off to come for a few days.

Yeah guys, get a date 'cos I have to travel too from Adelaide.

Tassie is great for bikers, with local guidance should be an even richer experience.

thanks for the encouragement guys. we know we want to get there.

depending on others and their availability, my preference is for the first 2 weeks in Feb. but will tag along with an earlier date if this suits best.
you have to remember , our K's get fairly hot under the collar , and to travel in the height of summer ( January ) it will escalate this heat issue.
the hottest part will be for those travelling from the northern parts, Sydney and Brisbane down to Melbourne.
Maybe if we did some early morning starts , seeing as most of the run to Melbourne will be via non picturesque freeway and highways. you can sleep it off whilst on the ferry.some of the festivals are held in the early part of Feb as well.
does anyone else have preferences?

I'm only adding this to the mix, my attendance is quite unlikely as I'm getting hints about going to New Zealand at this time.

The two folk festivals are mid/late January on concurrent weeks.

January the ferry has day crossings available (less $ as you aren't paying for sleeping acommodation).  I prefer the day anyway as I have a lot of trouble sleeping on the boat.

I am going to have to opt out of this one from the start.

February is probably the worst time next year for me to go.

Going on a cruise for wifes 50th (shhh. I didn't tell you how old she is) and family things happening some time in Feb.

I will follow this thread and ride with you in spirit. Crying or Very sad

You are right Kyle, no one place can lay the claim of best in the world for bikes. That guys route included
equally excellent roads as does everywhere on this amazing planet.
The advantage in Tassie is the compact size, a variety of terrain and low traffic volume which adds to the ride
immensely. I am still discovering new routes then there are the dirt tracks much of it single track, another kind of awesome!
Just had an idea, I'll try and organise a couple of dirt bikes for my area.

Nice, GWR

In the article the guy bangs on about how Australia is manic in its pursuit and monetary punishment of speeders, then goes on to say nearly the exact opposite about Tasmania. Sounds incredible.

And my neck of the woods? Yeah, Eastern Oregon is also one of the best places to ride.
Tasmania 2014 - Page 2 EasternOregonUSA_zpsfdb019b3
Tasmania would fit within it twice.

Awesome landscapes, love it all.
There was a time when Tassie lagged the big island in speed enforcement,
sadly modern technology makes it ridiculously easy and sooo profitable,
Tassie just had to embrace the cash cow, the economy is struggling,
so come on over and spend some bucks. Met 3 bikers at the scenic lookout
a couple of months ago, passed a camera at 240kph ! if it was a patrol car, Go Directly to Jail!
140 and up you don't drive that vehicle away!
It's a game. Anyone for tennis?

Kyle , if you keep putting those sort of pics up, you will have an Aussie invasion there too, it's already started with TWB.

Ed, you mentioned TWB. He claims a 6th sense with speed cameras and radar etc.
I used to have that knack too, the last few years and 3 pings, 2 at home in tassie
have me doubting my Kharma credits. Surely 44 years and half mill Kms accident free (bike only) count for
something? Nope, $280 please for 15 over the posted limit. No!
Your serve!

Kyle it is of course about justice, law and public safety.
See my thread about my son recovering his stolen bike, 6 days and counting, justice?
The law is the law.
And public safety? No one knows more about safety than a biker and on long boring
stages (plenty in OZ) those few K's over the limit keep the concentration Keen.
Try telling that to the Magistrate though.

Ghost, I did see your thread re the stolen bike.

Years ago I came back to my broken-into home to find that nearly all my mountaineering gear had been jacked, to the tune of about $6000 (I was in Search and Rescue and a heluva lot of specialized gear).

I scoured the local used sporting goods shops and pawn shops and hit pay dirt, finally. Got some of my gear back and the manager of the store actually gave me photo ID of the guy selling it, his name, address too. Said he'd testify for me if need be.

I took this to the police, in fact the very officers that were called when I reported the break in. They recognize him as one with priors for B&E's (breaking/entering). A week went by w/nothing so I called them, only to have the desk person tell me that they would call me re this case. Never recouped my losses.

Really looking forward to reading that you've got it back safe 'n sound. Keep at em.

Is anyone going to Tassie Jan 2015
I have booked on the "Spirit" 05 Jan and returning 19 Jan 15
If anyone else is going to be over there at that time it would be good to keep in touch or maybe catch up
I will be taking an outfit and the family (wife and 10 yr old son) and doing the camping bit.
At this stage we have no plans, will get some brochures etc I suspect to map out some sort of a plan
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this will be our first time over there

Mike

Packo , good to hear you're booked in .
it will be a wonderful experience for you as a family travelling around Tassie.
I've been contemplating taking my 11 year old son and pulling a trailer fitted out with camp gear .
which would mean a trip the same as you during January, to fit in with the school holidays.
I'm not sure what sort of itinerary you have in mind , there are places like Zeehan rail and Strachan , Port Arthur , Richmond, Bicheno for the Penguins , Hobart , Cradle Mountain and other National parks, Cataract Gorge is also great with kids, Mole Creek caves is worth a look.
there is excellent camping in Tassie, some good info in this camping guide if you are lost for ideas. and a map or two for ideas.
I've already got the all clear from the boss for 12 -26 Jan , so I'll do some checking up and see if we might be able to meet along the way.

Just be sure when packing, to put in plenty of wet weather gear, good chance you will need it.

groverK,

Thanks for the reply and all the info, couldnt have done better from the tourist bureau, over the next few weeks we will go through it all and try to map out a bit of a plan. Have learnt over the years though that motorcycles tend to  throw the best laid plans into disarray so we generally go with a broad outline and tend to play the rest by ear, the main aim for us is to be flexible and have fun. At the moment we have a trip to Uluru planned for the next school holidays at the end of this month and then it will be a matter of waiting for January to come around to get down to Tassie.
I would like to keep in touch with you and if we can manage to cross paths in Tassie  that would be a real bonus
Thanks once again for your help
Mike
