I bought the rub back wet/dry....600grit. I can assure you that your fingerprints will disappear from your hands, especially using the wet. I am hoping that my hands recover before next weekend...I cut my fingers getting the broken lights off my ute. I do know that thinners will find ALL cuts.

After trying and failing with acetone stripper and sanding on the parts for my Seca, I used a heat gun on low setting.

It worked pretty well for me. The old paint just flaked off. I could get the remaining small chips off with a steel wire brush.

Of course, later I had to prime it extra deep to fill in some of the scoring, but it turned out pretty well.

Did you actually clean inside the heads of those bolts???

Once again, very impressive work.

One thing I am not sure of is why you are clear coating everything?
Is it to make cleaning easier? Eliminate cleaning and just hose it off? Or is it to give you something to do next time you decide to restore the bike?

get well soon

Rossco my thinking is I want to keep my options open to turn it into something a little sicker later on (turbo, naked etc) as I did with my last bike, if naked I would like to see these parts clear al. The engine whole drive chain for my early 84 was all aluminium anyway

Yes Sean, terminal.
Paul,
Of course I use cotton buds. I don't know why you would suggest anyone would use anything else. It's obvious.
And I find they work better with the tears of kittens. Just gives that extra little bit of a polish.

Hi OG yes I thought the can would be good for the bolts I do all the time as setting up the spray gun is alot of work for a few bolts, but on the side says only good for 30 days after first use !. Forks are interesting as will do cosmetics now but need to think about what you did as well with your setup, if I remember you went the k75R inners with trick oil as well.

Due to the idea that Blakey had of the glass cabinet for the engine I was thinking the only issue with that is the resto halts so to be able to continue I will mount the following to the front of the bike so I can finish the resto but still leave it in the shed complete and not have to start it. All I need now is to work out the Vrooom Vroom noise setup, mybe some recordings gathered from the follow riders played back through the laptop & speakers mounted in the fairing.

That way I can still experience how it is to ride a K100 as I have never had the pleasure to do so yet.

That'll work! Even better if you connect the volume control to the throttle grip so that you get more noise when you wind it open Very Happy

Good point again Charlie I have pulled the headers off the pipes to polish now and was contemplating the pipe mod whats your personal view off it Charlie ?. More hp and better sound ?, thought it might need a clean inside I was wondering if some of the weight is caused by carbon buildup.

to be honest halo....i have been spoilt with the staintune ....but honestly the throaty roar of the moded pipes is more to my likeing .

berts mod is not too demanding in sound levels as to give you a headache from droning or some such ...(unlike many "open systems " that we see on some of those "hoons" cars or cutoff systems on bikes )

as we do more research into mixtures etc ...im sure we can attempt to increase our economy at lower to middle throttle settings , the throttle responce is well worth the modification

i think you might save at least a kilo of weight too , given that you will be cutting out mostly rusty components ...My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 8 112350

Halo, I have noticed a definate increase in performance. Once up past 1800 rvs and climbiing through the gears. When i first got the muffler back i found the old girlvwas a lot more responsive and even seemed to pull away a bit better. There was a noticable increase in fuel consumption but as TWB pointed out it was just the " this sounds so good " new toy novelty riding.

There has been a small increase in fuel use that is really not worth worring about..mabey 2-3 k ltr two up. I still get 20k tltr. It sounds its best while accelerating and reallyvturns a few heads when other riders watch you start her up and it is not the usual whine....And it is kinda shiny....

Well another mile stone for me today the frame has been a big job to get finished, so many angles to sand blast from and detail. Sand blasted then polished with brass wire brush wheel alternating between large and small wheels on different grinders, only first coat done so far but thats it for today.

Oh my. I paid to have my frame cleaned. Well done you.
And that is a milestone right there. Sticking the (first coat) painted from on the motor is awesome.
I bet you put it up there and then took a good few paces back, right hand rubbing your chin with a big cheesy grin on your mug and said out load 'I reckon that looks pretty damn good" "Did someone say beer o'clock?'
And you better clean that bedside table before you put it back in the house. She Will notice the new grey top.

My my halo, all these toy's you play with. makes being a grown up really worth while don't it. rossco very caring of you to remind halo about that bedside table, been there done then????? now what type of black is that, rattle can gloss or something different. The reason I ask is I was going to do mine but chickened out when i stripped the bodywork off of it and figured it to be painted in a satin gloss type, ended up grabbing the turtle polish and gave it a big clean and left it that way. Also sound wise, I would have to add that a set of 4 into 4's would have to compliment our bikes distinct sound, though I have as yet not seen it done.

was thinking 2 into 2 keith but that drive shaft kinda gets in the way ...but i guess a cross bridge under the g/box has been done before and mount off the foot peg braces...might look a little odd from the rear and problem in getting something that carries symetry to both sides .

btw an old "real" triumph tripple of the late 70s - 80s has mooved into the area ...the one with 3 exhausts on the right hand side (old school stuff ) but its noisy as hell. which kinda distracts from the grace that they once had . oh well we're all different huh ?

kinda waiting to see what bert can do for seanii halo ...should be impressive for the "outfit"

that frame looks good mate ....cheers !

2 into 2, Charlie.............K50?

Early in the development BMW also did have a double barrel exhauster,
at the same side.

When this issue comes up, it was a company that did make a 4 into 2 for the K100................but it`s to far back for my hard disk to remember the name,
or where I did see it.

I think the upper exhaust will require more muffling, what with that alternative fuel an all. a four into four would be the thing to hear, think back to the honda four and the big Kwacka 9's before they were replaced with the distinct howl of a four into one, they had a sound that we could capitalize on. They only need to cross under the bell housing and sweep back to look the part,

Yes the exhaust requires further investigation it's a really great section of the bike to modify inclusive of the airbox.

Thanks for the positive comments guys, K75cster about four pages back I did abit of a rightup with a photo on the KBS paint that I spray on.

The frame is completed now and boy was it an issue with cold weather playing havick but I made a small hot box for the frame with light drop sheet plastic and heat blower.

Thanks 88KE yes the frame was another big tick on the resto, I was tempted to cut corners with the sand back to metal as who could tell but didn't as you can see from the raw steel photo. The black gloss KBS really s***s me though, the finish is better than the camera shows as it looks orange peelish on the camera and dimpled but up close has that flowing luster that I really like, looks to me like a high gloss issue. I know that for a great looking frame finish that even a can of flat black would look better but don't see that being as durable as the one pack KBS, the finish is very strong on this guff. I am wondering if I should put a fourth coat on the frame as the more I spray the more the paint evens out but its very thick already compared to a acrylic finish. It really does my head in with the KBS black but I love the KBS clear, all part of the learning curve it will all make sense in the long run no dought.

Rick G oops, was thinking that but still did it does it mean I will have to pull apart and inspect ? it's propped now insn't that all that matters Question

With all of that new shine you'll have to paint the spring on this old Fox shock to match. I'll get it in the post tomorrow.

Its when left for a while it slowly mangles the boot or most important the drive drops quickly when the shock is removed and you aren't ready for the weight of it.

Fox Twin Clicker is what the shock is known as. Also, though it's in no way essential to the functionality, there's one lock ring for the spring preload. My Bitubo is built that way too. Some might say two are needed to prevent the adjustment from changing as you ride, unlikely under spring tension.

I decided that the frame top coat finish isnt that good as I have sprayed this too thick based on comments from others who spray that I know so I am going to strip it and start again to learn how to spray this black KBS Sad

Halo, I didn't get the post office today...the local Autumn county fair is in full swing and the roads are clogged with fairgoers and traffic's a bear to have to bear...but I'll get an hour off one arvo this week before they close to get there and get it posted. It sounds as though you're still in the refinish and rebuild stages anyway. It's looking good, but it is always best to do it right before you bolt it all back together. In the end you'll be more satisfied with your result.

Your right OG the black isn't my best friend yet but it looks like a good durable finish.

Not happy with my finish I set to sanding the frame back with wet & dry and found that after a couple of hours I prefer the finish, see what you think.

Learned a lesson thinner coats and sand backs (should have known).

Thanks TWB take your time no big rush, when you can fit it in mate.
