Found that the lower K1100 tripple clamp sits lower than the K100 so the middle fairing piece (radiator cover piece) I had to cut down, almost killed me to cut a good condition part.

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 18 Img_4210

Also fitted the factory 25Ah BMW battery I purchased from the K1100 bloke. Much better than the one I had fitted whilst starting. Speakeing of such things the starter problem is fixed now thanks to the Diesel oil.

Well I can instantly see why the battery had a problem mate. Fill it with distilled WATER, not distilled grains.

I have a feeling that stuff puts lead in his pencil and not distilled fluid in the battery RT.

Guys talked to Chriss(the owner) at BM motorcyles here in melbourne (ringwood) says that the rims I got from the K1100 are K1100RS rims instead of the K1100LT rims which are different and better ?????. AT present they have 120/70 ZR17 speed pilot 2's and the rear is a 160/60 ZR18 speed pilot 2.
He said I can fit either the speed pilot 3's (Michelins) or the Metzeler's he recons they are both great tyres, any thoughts please guys

The K1100 RS and K100RS 16v are the same front is 17inch 3inch wide rear 18 in and 4.5 in wide.
K1100LT are front 18in and 2.5 wide and rear 17in and 3in wide.
You have a big choice of good radials for the wider wheels on an RS where the LT wheels were made still using the old bias ply tyres.
I have RS wheels on my K1100LT and fitted Michilin pilot Road II and so far have 12000km and about half gone very happy but I found that the rear needs more pressure than they recommend, about extra 4-6lb.
My opinion is go with the RS wheels they are streets in front.

nods head ...yep them 4.5 inch rear rims fit some nice tyres halo

i put a pirelli "Angel ST".on the back and similar on the front which fitted up just fine ...now just have to get a front end with a cross brace between fork legs

i have to say ....that the tyres of old are not the same (come no where near close (in my opinion )) as any of the "new breed " of compounds and tread patterns ...thankfully .....they are trully amazing

you didnt say what the measurement was to the right hand of the tyre to the swing arm on the paralever yet halo (on those 160 rears ) did you try the narrower spacers yet ? eager to find out exactly the dimensions

Cheers Blakey all good now it's over

Remember the 86RS that i was not happy about the handling of after getting the wheels/front end off the K1100 and fitting, well that problem just appears to be tyre related as I had a pair of the Metzeler z8's fitted today so I had to go up the twisties to try. Wow what a difference, neutral transitions from standing up to leaning over etc, she turns really well now.

Well the poor 86RS has been pulled apart many times now and again for the new clutch kit.

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 18 Img_4214

As much as I don't like the look of the K1100 Peg brackets, I was impressed by the design that keeps the vibration off the pegs. Notice the extra gearbox support bracket off the K1100 gearbox compared to the k100's

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 18 Img_4215

Some advice please guys, I want to fit the shock I got off TWB (legend of a bloke) however look at the difference in lenghts.
Left TWB fox shock for K100, middle the showa on it at present from the K1100 (remember I have the paralever) & right the original K100 shock off the 84RS.
Question is am I stuck with the taller shock as I have the K1100 para on the back, or am I able to put the sh*t hot Fox shock on, oh and by the way I will fit the rebuild kit charlie gave me if I can use the Fox shock (cheers charlie top bloke as well)

Won't he have to raise the front forks in the triple head if he does this - same as buying a shorter shock?

Just a thought, Halo,
I'm only familiar with the 8v shock which has the eye casting threaded to the shaft. If the 1100 eye is also threaded, it looks to be a bit longer.
Now if the Fox shock has a similar fixing, would it be possible to use the 1100 eye and make the Fox a bit longer?
Paul.

I reckon Lifeguard is right. You can run the shorter shock but would need to drop the clamps to retain geometry. I ran my 16 valve paralever with the shorter standard K100 shock for a while with the clamps dropped to reduce the seat height. I never liked the handling and have returned to original shock and fork height.
Cheers
Dave

Cheers guys for your responses, got to love the advice here, I would have tried lowering the forks but after the comments I won't (thanks guys) what a bummer as I would have loved to use the fox shock on this bike.
Is the K1100 showa shock that is on it any good (in general ) guys ? (that is better than the K100 standard by alot)

Paul don't understand can you try to explain again

When I bought my "Old nail" K75C years ago, the rear shock was completely knackered and the only replacement I could find was a Hagon short unit which I kept on for about a year. I didn't drop the forks and it handled okay. The biggest issue was the stand.

Maybe still worth trying the short shock mate. Mike seems to have had a better experience than I did perhaps with a bit of trial and error you could find a setting that worked?

Wow only a couple of weeks till the trip and what to do with the shock. Thanks for responses guys still not shore about the answer.

1) Is the twin clicker much better than the K1100 shock (I think much better but dont know what others know about them)

2) Will the lower back cause riding issues if so does dropping the forks solve this ?

3) Is it just worth reweilding the top mount lower by the difference in shock length I could do that tomorrow with a mig here

Hi Halo,
I was thinking of taking the top eye mounting off the 1100 shock and fitting it to the Fox. It looks a bit longer, but probably the Fox shock fitting will be different.
Paul.

But really it would just be easier to give the Fox to rossko.

You are supposed to put them at 120deg but with new and used bite hoonose. I have never had to remove one and realign to fix a vibration.
My theory is that they are all ballanced individually then put into sets and checked and a mark painted on so that when assembelled dont change from when they were known to be good.
If you buy a complete set there are no marks on them or so I believe.

I realize that you built this more than a year ago, but I simply love its simplicity, yet great detail also. Would you be willing to direct me to the original the post that listed the parts required for making one of these? Or perhaps forward the list to me directly.

Thank you very much! Very Happy

Yes will do wigwan, sorry for late response only looked here now, I didn't do a thread only a quick post as seen by you already, the tub was from bunnings (hardware store), the hand inserts are pluming down pipe parts (hardware store) and the gloves were from the garden section, the soda bicarb I got from supermarket.
Well Andy did a great effort and help me out heaps with getting the bike ready, cheers mate, I'm sure I will return the favor mate. My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 18 112350

Beautiful and inspirational work Halo. Cant wait to see the finished 84 RS, and loving the mods youve done to the 86.

Just spent the last 3 or 4 nights reading this post in its entirety and have enjoyed it immensely. Will definitely be a reference point for me when my 3 K's make it down south to me.

Oh and if rossko ends up not wanting that shock, id be more then happy to free up some shed space for ya Smile

Thanks for the goods words FLoyd_of_oz, yes work & selling & buying a house is the priority right now but all that will change december as I move to a house in the hills with alot less maintenance, that will cut me some slack so I can work on  K bikes again. Anyway with the 84 packed away for the move I have turned my attention to stamp collecting or similar really  magazines with K100 test within. My intention is to scan them and make available online for a read, any copy right issues with 30 year old magazines ?

Thanks Charlie & Paul, not being able to work on my bike has shown me just how much I really miss it. I move in on the 30th of November Paul, see you there for the house warming:D  . Big K100 shed to go in when I move down the back of the block (big block) and I'm thinking it will need it's own house warming as well when completed later on in the next year from the forum boys.

Yer it's fully renovated, the bloke just spent 250 thousand updating the house JR_K100RS with a paddock in the back instead of the English gardens that takes a gardener & I every Saturday to maintain, this is the current house
Yes 88_KE good jump start section at the front the block levels out at the back. (Its still in the hills though so no chance of a total flat block up here)
