Ain´t something Kamous missing in that photo of a famous statue of some famous one with that famous-to-be?

I was going to say the bike was missing as that is one of the parameters of the game that the bike is in the photo but this time we shall grant an exemption as Mal probably didn't want to park the bike on the footpath for fear of some flat footed country walloper selling him a ticket to the local police ball.

Today my K100RS visited the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield to pose with the statue of Sir Geoffrey de Havilland.  Sir Geoffrey was the founder of the De Havilland Aircraft Company and was one of the pioneers of aircraft design and manufacture, going on to develop famous aircraft such as the Tiger Moth, Mosquito, Vampire/Venom and the first passenger jet airliner the Comet.  



The De Havilland Aircraft Company was based in Hatfield until the factory was closed in 1994 under British Aerospace, many of the old buildings survive and the factory building where the Comet was built is now a leisure centre and the airfield has been largely re developed.  For me, De Havilland has always been special as the Comet 4 was the first aircraft I ever flew on and my grandfather worked with De Havilland’s in the 50’s. De Havilland aircraft were graceful and beautiful designs, designed with the inspiration ‘if it looks good it flies good!’



Sir Geoffrey’s statue is situated near the entrance to the University campus and he is depicted holding a model of the Comet 1 airliner, on the surrounding walls there are plaques noting his designs and achievements.

Ford motor company manufactured over 8,000 of those B-24 Liberator bombers just down the road from where I live, at the Willow Run plant. We have a Tuesday night bike night in Ypsilanti, Michigan and there is still a diner restaurant in town called the Bomber.  At peak production the plant was cranking the planes out at a rate of one per hour.  Many of the line workers at the time were women (nickmaned "Rosie-the Riveter" due to the lack of males available for line work or welding or machining, etc).

It is a getaway bike...stop people following....and no it is not an air rifle that needs gas in it to operate..in case you thought that the position was important.

Gas operated air rifles need a charge of 200 to 300 bar. I know we all have a lot of hot air, but I don't think any of us could generate that pressure - from either end. 

I'm willing to be corrected on that, but it would have to be by name . . .

It is a bright sunny UK day, perfect for getting out on a Brick and stopping off at the local Golf Club, Collingtree Park in Northampton. 



The next challenge then!  We have a bit of a landmark in Northampton nicknamed the 'Northampton Lighthouse', which is a bit of a laugh as Northampton is about 100 mile from the nearest bit of coast, although the next piece of land as high as the top of the tower is reputedly Moscow... The 'Lighthouse' is in fact the National Lift Tower originally built to develop and test new lift designs at the factory around it.  The factory is long gone but the tower still remains for the development of lift technologies and for thrill seeking nutters to abseil down!   http://www.nationallifttower.co.uk/



So go find a Lighthouse, Lift Tower or indeed just a Lift to photograph your Brick in!  Have fun.

The best I can do is a tower(with arachnid flavouring)


With the next challenge being you bike in front of a field of colour, this is canola(rapeseed), but anything else will be fine. Let's not get too obscure guys, its stops the competition in its tracks every time.

Right...green is a colour and this green will turn to brown within a week as our temperatures go into the mid and high 30s C.This field is sown with oats and a close inspection will show some cattle in a a section that has been separated with an electric fence.
This proves that even at my age I can still sow my oats.

New challenge...bike with a caravan or motorhome.........bike does not have to tow the caravan.

The bull...1.1 tonne needs to keep eating as he has an important job.

That wouldn't happen to be a Piper Navajo by chance?  Or even the Navajo Chieftain?

I'm 90% sure their Panther Navajo's, the boss owns them so I'll find out when I'm there next. They have 6 cylinder boxer engines if that helps. Here's another pic or two, you'll notice the leaping panther on the tail.

I think you will find them to be Piper Navajos and not the Chieftain model.  Just 'cause I have not heard of an aircraft manufacturer called Panther. 

The engines should be either Lycoming or Continentals.  Memory escapes me but I think the later. 

Are they still flying, or been put out to pasture?

Your probably right Dave, I'm not much of a plane guru,  the boss calls them the Panthers but this is what they are.
 Piper PA-31-310 Navajo C/Colemill Panther Navajo.
This one has won a few air races in it's day. The Silver Shark, Yes they are still serviced and ready to go if needed.

Not that RS in the UK again...? 

Fraid so, with autumn kicking in over the UK and even the tail end of a hurricane due this weekend, every opportunity to ride the Brick before winter is being taken and this challenge was too good to miss!



The aircraft are a Grumman AA-5B in the foreground and a Rockwell Commander 114 in the background.
Odd thing was that while I was taking the photo a chap came up to look at the Brick, turned out he used to have an '85 RS and now runs a K1200!

Next challenge.  Brick with a boat.  This is on the River Thames near Oxford.

I've just discovered what to do with all  my weekends when I've got nothing to do!

Looks like I'll be out taking photos this weekend!!  hahaha
(assuming I can get my bikes electrics back on in time!!)

Also I've got some really good ideas for challenge photo's!!

Hey Al, where's our new challenge? :p

This is a park called "The corridor of Oaks", it has an oak tree planted for each Prime Minister of Australia. The last couple haven't planted theirs yet.


The plaque is very out of date.


He was my local member where I grew up as a teenager.

The challenge, something (a park, a plaque, a monument, a building etc) that commemorates a member of govt at whatever level in your neck of the woods, the higher the better.

A K on a bridge!


Your mission if you wish to accept it is to get a picture of a k bike on a bridge to complete this challenge.  Then add another picture with a new challenge for the next prospective participant/s(k bike included)

(PS, the pic above is a bridge over the Murrumbidgee river south of Yass.  I've been going there for years, it's normally this busy).  You cant really see it but the road on the other side twists up the side of the hill to the left, heaps of blind corners.
