If its an 86 it is not a SE they were the very last of the 8V engines in the RS (1989) and there was not an 8V made that had a paralever so its a bittsa. Still a good buy but not a genuine SE.

Simple its had a paralever added. All that is needed is the gearbox with the right mount for the lower arm and a paralever setup and it falls in.
I noticed it has the K100 RS 16V foot peg plates as well. The paralever didn't hit the streets till April 1989 in Australia and Jan 89 in Europe and US

I cant see really well what the condition is but looks like some chips on the fairing. If it is a replica paint job it's very good even the wheels are white. The gearboxes are esentially the same except for the lower mounts for the lower arm which are on most boxes from about 90 onwards and not drilled for the bolt unless the paralever was fitted. The swingarm mounts are the same and output shaft takes the two piece drive shaft. The wheel base is about 50mm longer and rear shock 30mm longer because the lower mount is back futher.
It could well be from an SE or even had a frame replaced after a crash. These bikes have been round for near 30 years and a lot of upgrades have been done by owners and heaps of changes after repairs from crashes. One thing that makes some odd bikes are the police bikes that are converted to dual seat by using seats and ducktails from write offs. I saw a K1100LT with seat and ducktail from an 84 K100 a few weeks ago and when I said to the owner that it was ex police he swore black was blue it was factory original. I saw a K75 with a R80 RT front end once.

Great pictures Paul thanks very much I've captured those.
Well I checked the 86 paralever RS out and replaced oil but no need for any other fluids as whilst the bike has been sitting for 4 years it was just serviced prior to storage. All filters etc looked brand new.
The bike wouldn't start it turns out the fuel pump has seized and the rubber/foam seat has dissolved as usual.
I took the pump from my 84 RS and did the following Mod that I wouldn't do for the 84 RS but did for this one for now.

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 13 Img_2321

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 13 Img_2322

Fitted to the bike and she started and sounded sweet as Very Happy but then stopped and wouldn't start.
I detailed her abit she is no immac restore but I am still tickled pink
end of the day
New Staintune muffler
Paralever & gearbox from a 16V model
New matching tyres
New airfilters etc
Really great condition paniers
A showa (excuse the spelling) rear shock
The SE 89 model fairings & tank
No reg though
$1600 all up

noice halo enjoy mate !...wont take much to get her going by the sound of it .....just replace all the rubbery bits going to and from the fuel rail (inside tank included ) a new fuel filter ..and hope fully no rubber made it to the injectors....got some nice bits there too ....what a win !!!

hey do us a favour ....take a pic from the back along the wheel lines eh ? and what rear tyre is on that ? (looking to see if there is an offset to the right a little )

looks like a standard rim off the old series to me, so should be a 130 x 80 x 17 ?

Thats looking good Halo. Looking again the footpeg plates are K1100 and I would say the paralever is as well the lower arm is a pressed steel and the Showa shockie are standard post 1994 K1100. Check the ratio of the drive it will be stamped next to the breather on the machined surface. You may be lucky and have a 2.75 which will give good fuel consumption.

That rear wheel looks offset to the right. There is a difference in offset from the Y spoke to the 3 spoke. Me and Charlie measured them at my place once but didn't find any difference but there apparently is.
If you put the K100RS 16V wheels on you will feel the difference with a radial tyre.

That works out to 2.81 which is from a K1100RS. The bits are esentially the same except for the lower arm and there is something about the case of the drive but I can't remember what now.
The wheels of a K11LT or RS will fit and also K100RS 16V but the LT wheels are narrower and designed for Bias ply tyres.
The front wheel is a PITA to change because of the different discs and calipers but it certainly not impossible to put the wide K1100RS wheel on the front. The big difference on the front is the mounting of the Calipers is 12mm closer to the axle on a K100 than K1100.
I have seen a conversion plate that Larry Ronstat from Special Ks in LA made to adapt the calipers.
http://specialks.net/index.php?p=1_13_87K75-Special-BEAUTY- Have a look at the caliper adapter on this one, and all the rest of his bikes as well they are works of art.

I never had a problem with fuel pump, but I am wondering if anyone tried with fuel pump mounted outside the fuel tank, I remember some later model of VW beetle (1600) had outside electric fuel pump. Any experience with that?

i think all the paralevers have the same offset halo... which is different to the standard k100 ....it seems to me that the wheel rims and mount to the bevel box is standard across all models (with the righthand edge of the rim to hub center mounting exactly the same ) ...what makes the difference is the swingarm and bevel box alignment of about another 15 - 18 mm to the right (different to the non paralever) i recon the angle of the swing arm is just slightly different to allow for this and the wider rim .

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 13 2012-051

yes a 3 spoke 4.5 inch rear wheel will fit in there nice and be all centred correctly ...

what i did was to put on a 4.5 inch rim which mooved the centre some 15 or so mm to the left with a standard bevel box...now this in itself is not an issue but with the old fischel and sacks type forks ...without the brace across the fork legs (twb had one on durring his upgrades ) the front tyre tries to run a new centre line ...so what i ended up with was a bald front tyre on one side of the centre line ...which had moved about 8- 10 mm to the left ,

so to correct the situation on your bike ...get a 4.5 inch rim for the rear then front and rear will track perfectly ...do not run crossply with radial at the same time ...

i still have a 4.5 inch radial on my rim in the back room ...hopeing one day to implement the stategy again ...just found that with my setup the wandering down the road was kinda disconcerting after the front became baldish .

The odd thing about Larry's bike, Beauty, is that it uses the K1100's 20mm front MC and a pair of the old 2 piston K100 calipers along with 305mm K1100 rotors. That is the reason for the disc adapter on that particular example. Larry professes to do this setup because it gives greater progressive feel to the braking on the bike. Halo's new steed is using the standard K100 13mm front MC with standard 280mm fixed rotors so it will have normal mediocre braking of the K100. He won't have a need to make a disc adapter as the calipers/rotors are size correct for the forks.

BTW, congrats Halo. Nice looking bike. You'll really appreciate the improved handling of the bike with the paralever backend. Definitely fit radials to the bike if the rims permit it; I've heard the handling is night/day different from bias-plies. Unfortunately, the snowflake rims can't accept radials.

have a look here rob ... http://www.pirelli.com/tyre/ww/en/motorcycle/sheet/angel_st.html

and the wider wheels and radials thread

http://k100rt.aforumfree.com/t2713-wider-wheels-radial-tyres-on-a-k100

angel st fit right on the front 110 x 80 x 18 ....and rear ..with a 4.5 x 18 rim (3 spoker ) 160 x 60 x 18

did some grinding with those beauties on

just wish i had a paralever rear.

but will admit the pirelli sports demons are great for crossply tires

-86 K100RS motorsport version came with Pirelli radials
(100/90 VR18 und 140/80 VR17) as standard.

Which also was used on the later Motorsport models...like this one.

I used the Pirelli radials when they were available in the '80s and later I went to Dunlop radials, 110/80VR18 K105 front and 140/80VR17 K700 rear, until they became obsolete.

Paul.

Halo, if your wheel is offset to the right, then making a thicker spacer (or adding extra standard spacers) should bring the wheels back into line?

Paul wisdom as usual fantastic idea l can get the guys at work to cad and laser cut out sourced sounds abit over the top but not when you work with these things.
Paul the bike still only started once yesterday then only fires once then stops l swopped out the fuel pump now l think l will put Albys trusted injectors in thanks to the top end crew
Makes me laugh that l have been working on K100's all year yet l have never ridden one Razz
Keen to see if l can compare both to see if the paralever makes a difference

This is my 84RS rebuild thread but just a little more on the 86RS

Changed all fluids, all filters, all looked new as per receipts, but she wouldn't start.
Fuel pump corroded so I rebuilt (inner parts only shown)
Before

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 13 Img_2327

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 13 Img_2328

After I used thinners and a very fine wire brush

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 13 Img_2330

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 13 Img_2331

The fuel pump works a treat again, still no luck I turned to Albys & the boys reconditioned injectors My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 13 112350 guys but still no cigar. Looked to see the injectors spray pattern great by the way but it would intermittently stop turns out the connector to the ECU was loose used Blakey magic tonic brew and away she went startup.

Halo

That's just what they sounded like when they were new back in '84/'86

Lots of K100 recordings on youtube.

Keep up the good work.

Wow. Sound and Vision.
If my bike sounded like that I would be happy and would also be part of 'the club'.
Grab your helmet Halo. Or for our German viewers, grab you halo Helmet, we are going for a ride.
Maybe that was funnier in my head :suspect:

That's a fine sound sir.

Had and have been on mine for 3 months.
These things produce the greatest cacophony of noises...
Whirrs, chirps, wails, honks,...that's part of it, near as I can figure, that I like...besides that it runs like stink. Laughing ...meaning that when grabbing a handfull in 3rd gear one should know where it is pointed and where ya want to be because you're going to be there real soon.

I have an idling issue that I'll pursue in the near future....meanwhile it gets ridden everyday.

Good on ya! Get on it and go. Very Happy

Best, JimK

Thats where the nicname Kwiners came from. Its like an old pommie bike leaking oil, if it didn't do it there would be a problem.

...FWIW...when mine is cold, makes thumps and bumps sounding almost like piston slap in a worn out 2 stroke. Like something banging around where it should not be. Was kinda alarmed. Read something in some forum newbie section about that...forgot where. Well anyway, when ridden, goes away in my case.
